Hey I know this is probably a naab question, and you can flame me and insult me, but please also just awnser me if you can.

I was planning originally to preload HL2, then buy it retail and then punch in the CD key, cause I like the convinience of playing trough steam, but A lot of people who are going to buy genuinly trough steam need the bandwith, and I don't wanna be an a**hole, so my question is can I just install HL2 from the CD's in my steamapps and just type my CDkey in steam, so I can still play it trough steam but do not need to download it through it.

(I'm an sentimental kind of guy, I like to have the box and manuel and all, thats why I want to buy it retail) :bounce:

What a stupid question..sorry to flame, but really. Of course you can install from the CDs!

of course you'll be able to play hl2 retail over steam, thats the idea. downloading it via steam is just a second way to purchase it, instead of going to a store. you know?

if youre going to buy it retail, its no use downloading this pre-load stuff.

Thanks for being so considerate anyhow. People who aren't going to buy through Steam are being awfully annoying by taking up the bandwith of those who are going to buy through STEAM. Although it doesn't really matter, there'll be plenty of oppertunity to pre-load!

CZ retail on steam required people to download all 1.5 gigs again, theres been no infomation as to whether valve have implimented a conversion system for HL2, if you wanna download 2-3 gigs after release to be elligable for updates, then fine.

Unless of course you dont want to spend the time swapping 5 CDs in and out. Of course if you get the DVD version you wont do any swapping.

So yes there is "use" in downloading it now even if you are buying retail. Maybe not a real GOOD one (I mean come one it saves you what all of 15 mins) but a "use" none the less.

Then why bring it up?

HL2(Steam download)+Steam=HL2(CD's/DVD)+Steam. You have to have steam its integrated into HL2. AND Yes You can play it offline. Steam supports offline play, so before all you people in the stoneage(with no internet connection or dial up) pumle this thread with what about Me posts. Its ok take a breath and put on a clean pair of undies, you too can play HL2.

hl2 itself will be around 3 gb big, and you seriously want to tell me that i'll have to download 2-3 gb extra, just for being able to play it in the internet? that doesnt seem very credent to me.

CZ has a bug that stops you trying to convert an installation more than once/Steam install. Some people did get it to work.

You are "eligible" for updates regardless of whether you download or install from a CD. It's cache files either way with Source!

Yeah I know HL2 comes with steam in it, and I'm going to have to play trough it, but i now allready have an account cause I have HL, I want to know will I have to make another account for hl2 if I buy it retail, or will I just be able install it in C:/Valva/steam/steamApps/Mynickname, so I can play it trough my current account, and also won't need to swapp the damm CD's or DVD.
Will I need two accounts one for HL2 and the other one for the rest.
I think a lot of people misunderstood the question or just wanted to flame me for the sake of it.   :borg: ;(

I assume it will be like this:

You pop in your CD, a steam style installation window pops up and asks if it should search for an existing steam installation, if found, it will copy it's .gcf files to that directory and then unpack it. If not found, it will install steam for you..

I'm very sure that what you're saying will be possible, most of the people awaiting HL2 Already have steam and an account anyway.

Thnx I really appreciate you're awnsers!!!! : :cheese: :cheese: :p

I think that this is correct, would be easiest imo.
