The masterminds behind the popular Insurgency modification, which pits the United States Marines against insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, have sent word of Beta 2's imminence. Content lock is September 30th, which means that we'll hopefully be seeing Beta 2 in October - straight from the mouths of the devs. Also, a teaser render of a weapons model to be added in upcoming versions (although probably not Beta 2) can be found here.[br]If you haven't gotten around to checking out Insurgency yet, <a href="http://www.insmod.net/downloads]you should try it[/url]. If you've already played it, you're probably as excited about the next version as I am.

What's new in the beta? I still think the game is visually brilliant but it's gameplay is beyond dull.

They've said that there will be a newspost this week or next that'll tell us more about Beta 2.

This is a really great mod but I just didn't get into it. Not sure why.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Want to spend years working on a mod just to get a small niche audience? If so, ok.

If you'd like a larger fanbase...make the mod fun to play.

Did not really care for b1, will try b2 if they address some of the issues in b1 which I thought ruined the game. One of the biggest complaints were the poorly optimized maps which at the time made the game pretty much unplayable minus one or two of the maps but I have since rebuilt a top of the line system so that won't be an issue for me now.

maybe that's what they wanted... When your working for free making a pet project I would think your making it to your tastes primarily

I played the snot out of it for about a month, but for some reason it (and only it) lags on my uni connection so I haven't been able to play.

How can anyone say it isn't fun?

I've been playing since release and think it's a blast.
But then again, I do tend to force my team to work together.

I agree. If the teams commander isn't a dumbass and your team actually acts like a team then its a blast to play. But I see why some gamers might think its dull, not a lot of action and its too realistic (compared to other games that is).

Here are a few things we've done with this version that addresses some of your concerns:

  • Lots of map/game optimizations
  • A lot less crashing
  • A lot less bugs
  • On-Screen indicators and Overhead map - Improved navigation
  • Commander system changes - Commanders are now dynamic, based on your skills, and you can either accept or deny your promotion to commander.

The above all make the mod a much more enjoyable experience. A more detailed/comprehensive list of changes will be in an upcoming news post.

Eh, it's a niche mod. People who complain about that shouldn't play it.

The more niche it is because of unintuitive, inaccessible, or incomprehensible game design, the less people will play it. That said B2 sounds like it addresses a lot of the issues in B1, so I'll definitely be re-downloading it to find out for myself. Here's what they were talking about for B2 just after B1:
Patch News
We're working hard on a patch that is going to be released as soon as possible, with the next update to follow. We don't know if it's going to be 1.2 or something else yet, but here is what it's currently looking like:

* Added Overhead Map feature
* Added Commander Promotion feature (commander is no longer a class, but instead is an earned responsibility)
* New Team/Squad Selection Menu with player customization and weapon selection
* Improved linux server support
* Reduction of client-side crashes
* Team autobalance
* Measures against TK'ing and spawn camping
* Objective capture requirements and times tweaked due to popular demand
* Improved navigation (people should know where to go, what to do, a lot easier)
* Improved damage model
* Lowered player viewheight so players cant hit you when completely concealed
* Various map improvements and optimizations
* Spectator improvements
* Fixed M203 issues
* Fixed various exploits
* Fixed various small bugs

Many of you have been asking for an ETA and that's not an unreasonable request if you're dealing with a commercial product. However, this mod is being made entirely by a crew of volunteers and being given away for free. As such, they're not required to be at their PC working x hours a week on it and other things take priority. They're all as enthusiastic about playing insurgency as you are, so you can be sure that they're eager to get the next update out and improve everyone's gaming experience.

The level of activity I see behind the scenes here is huge, the operation is organized in a professional manner and there are sensible systems in place to move development along. We know it's frustrating having to put up with some of the bugs. What I'll say is this: it takes time to fix things properly. We want the next update to be a success and that means we have to get it right. Your insmod gaming isn't going to be improved by a half-finished update.

Here are some things we plan on addressing in future patches after the one we're currently working on:

* Continuation of bug fixing and gameplay tweaking/improving
* Focus on rewarding players for capturing objectives and following orders
* Focus on improving league support
* Tutorial/Training map
* New and improved weapons, maps, and other content
* Global stats system
* Improved interfaces
* Improved voice communications
* Improved commander system
* Improved gore, explosions, and other effects
* Introduction of experimental sound-immersion features
* Continuation of the optimization process
* New gametypes revolving around light infantry vehicles and explosives
* New theater of play (still being brainstormed)
Just remember this is old information, it's not gospel.

Wow, brilliant deduction. Did you come up with that all on your own? I thought I had to keep playing it even though I don't like it, thanks for letting me know I don't have to play it!

In all seriousness, I played for a few days when it first came out, gameplay sucked and wasn't fun, haven't touched it since. Last I checked player feedback was key to getting changes made to improve a mod. But hey, next time we can all take your advice and just not play it if it sucked, instead of giving feedback.

I tried liking it, but it turned out to be more brutal punishment than excitement and fun. I will definitely give b2 a shot though.

You guys are nuts, this game kicked us. For some reason my PC didn't handle it very well so I had to stop playing until I can afford to upgrade.
