We know there is quite some expectation regarding this new release, so we want to let you know exactly how things are going: there are still 17 open tickets in our development tracking list, and they are the subject of all our attention. The recent beta tests helped us identify quite a few of them, and while some issues are related to the overall look and feel of the game (mainly map tweaks, lighting and sound issues), and do not compromise gameplay (although we want to have the game polished before release), others are gameplay-affecting bugs that have to be addressed before we can release Beta 2.

Read the rest here.

I had high hopes for this mod before first public beta release. Sadly, the whole mod didn't live up to my expectations. I have to give it another try though because the concept is really nice and hopefully this eventually makes it the mod we were all expecting it to be. The changes look nice but I have to try it in order to get the overall feel.

P.S: Thumbs up to the team that keeps adding/advancing this mod! :)

bang bang bang bang...bang...bang...somebody shoot me,plz!
Anybody who finds these type of generic shooters fun and exciting clearly lacks taste.

Finally. They decided to add a ****ing overview map. I'm glad they didn't listen to those elitist bastards who say, "NOOO! The Army don't use maps in real-life! Go play CSS NUB!".

What separates this from any other generic modern warfare FPS?

I hoped for better.

Sometimes I think people expect a bit too much when it comes to modifications. Not every mod needs to be revolutionary and completely original to be successful. The gametype fits the theme of the mod, its the movement issues and poorly optimized maps I had gripes with for the most part. If they clean everything up and can do things like mark the objectives more clearly etc I will try the 2nd beta and give it another chance.

I like how it looks, nice artwork. I just have the feeling that ive seen that skybox texture before... : O

-dodo

The skybox texture is hipshots :) he released it on mapcore a long time ago and we have put his name in the contributor list etc. :] And i had a conversation with hipshot saying it was ok as long as he was credited which he is :)

I personally don't understand why people don't like this mod. I mean, sure, it's a bit generic in concept, but so is CS, BF2, and a dozen other major titles that everyone on this forum plays a few of. Ins has its own feel and it's a very good one.

Plus, I'm good at it.

Same here. Once I knew what I was doing, had learnt the map objectives by heart and was playing against players who had done the same, and was playing on a map that didn't have massive spawncamp issues, I actually had a lot of fun playing this. The problem is, because not enough care was given to designing it to help new players learning the game, that situation I just mentioned only used to happen once in a blue moon.

I'll definitely be playing it to find out how the map changes affect the gameplay. The other features and improvements will make the game 150% better if the map (re)design is up to par.

can't wait for the the update!

wish more people played, it had like 4000 when it first came out but then went down to like 200 within a few days really. i wasn't really that impressed at first either, but once your have played it for like 5 hours and you know the maps it is loads of fun, better than any other multiplayer fps right now - much better than cs or bf2/2142. if only they had made the 5 hours you need to get into it 20 minutes they might still have several thousand people playing it. such a shame

Wow, dude.
Shut the hell up and go crawl back into your hole.

Anyways, I'm damn glad they finally added a friggin overhead map.
Can't even begin to count how times I got lost in any of the maps.

One thing I don't get though is in the new map, why they didn't add any NVGs.
I mean, it's dark and soldiers do tend to have NVGs for just that occasion.

I forget why I stopped playing this.

For me it just was not any fun, I dont like it when I feel a game tries to force me to play a certain way if you know what I mean. As I said I am hoping for changes that make it enjoyable for me.

:) thank you guys for your warm comments. your constructive crits (for the most part ;D) are awesome. We make the mod to please us and our players. I hope you guys like beta 2 and hopefully we can roll out patches faster than this one. :)

Love this mod. Apart from looking and feeling great it felt nice to play. It was one of the few teambased shooters that wasn't boring from. The gun play just felt spot on, plus the fact you can sprint add lots opportunity for different approaches to problems, and a lot of variation.

The game looks like a sub-par version of BF2
At face value, that is true; the animations were also a bit iffy last time I played.

But I liked the mod during those times I wanted to do something like paintball, but didn't want to spend money on the equipment. It's probably the closest most people will get towards participating in MOUT training. I guess my main quibbles about the mod include the fact that RPGs were too easy to aim due to lack of simulating the rocket's uncontrollable trajectory. Or that with the default server config, noobish Marines would get steam rolled by a very well organized Insurgent team due to similarity of equipment but inconsistency of number of spawns.

I also thought that it was strange that human stress while firing weapons was not taken into account, but I understand that people find that issue controversial.

I tried playing this mod a few months back and I was wondering why the video looked so familiar. The gameplay was rather weak and servers were usually empty or low population for the most part. It reminded me of DoD but with even more camping (if you can imagine). I got tired about the 100th time I was killed by a player who I had no chance of retaliating against.

Quite enjoyed this mod and definitely looking forward to Beta 2 when it is rolled out. Sure it's not perfect but it was a nice change from CS and once people understood what they were doing it was pretty good fun. We'll definitely be putting up a Server when it's out.

Best made modification for HL2 that is out, the art/graphics, coding, features, sounds, models and everything is just brilliant for a mod'.

The gameplay was a little weak but it's still so well made not to play.

For me it was supposed to be a successor to Red Orchestra, but ended up being a lovechild of DoD and CS:Source which is the worst possible combination.

It's definitely missing that Red Orchestra feel that they were going for. Hopefully the next version will get a bit closer to that. Shame that they don't have a ballistics system like they did in RO.

Our goal wasnt to make red ochestra in modern combat.... thats far from it. Also we arent near done ins yet. Lots of stuff we need to remove + add. Going to be a fun trip :]! hope to see you guys down the road!

What was your goal then? What makes this mod unique against other mods/games?

Well, my impression was that INS was supposed to be a near simulation of modern warfare with some gameplay compromises. There's a lack of games realistic enough that you could replicate some interesting training scenarios, so I was pretty interested in that. I think that members from realism based clans would agree with me that while there are some really good simulations such as SWAT 4, the original Ghost Recon and OFP with the WGL mod, that there is a severe drought of dedicated ground combat simulations. Some people like to get together and try to replicate real life tactics, to test everyone's teamwork at the greatest stress.

So basically I thought that INS was trying to fulfill the niche of a modern war sim w/o the less glamorous elements of COIN (waiting for hours to pull off an IED attack, or to get hit by one).

Sure there are many modern war games like Battlefield, but the title of most realistic combat simulation remains unfilled due to the immense design challenges associated with it.

The game would never load up for me. Always crashed when loading maps.

My friend played it though, and what he played was unimpressive. He went back to playing BF2.

Hell, with CoD4 coming out, I'll be spending my time on that anyways :)

Firstly it's not a game, it's a mod. Secondly it's a mod in beta, which means it's not finished and it's principally out there so people can find and report bugs.

I doubt very much whether the team expect to create something to match CoD4, but with Insurgency they aren't expecting you to pay for it. It's a trade off.

Project Reality Mod for Battlefield 2 is probably the closest contender at the moment.

Enjoy your empty server.

This one is neither, and still isn't successful.

And don't give me that "it's only a beta" rubbish. Dod betas and cs betas were explosively popular.

So it's not DOD or CS  it's more popular than Zombie Master, Sven Coop, or The Specialists at the moment, all of which are very good modifications. I don't know if this is an amazing mod, but it's fun, and it's at least somewhat successful... I think someone's being a bit overly negative.

Not all Australians are descended from convicts you uneducated idiot. Go and lay some more bricks.

In all seriousness though, you could just kept things on a level and explained why this that and whatever was wrong intelligently (with a clear rationale beyond 'this sucks!!!'), but instead you opted for trolling, so don't bitch like a schoolgirl when it comes back at you.

Also your notion of successful is somewhat warped, insurgency was insanely popular when the original beta came out, and stayed that way for quite some time. IIRC it was about the 5th most popular online game on the steam network. With all of the games above it being actual commercial products (and a few below as well). Pretty good going for a mod in it's initial beta really. Given that the next release is going to be a more refined product and a lot more stable I'm not seeing why it's going to have any less of an impact.

Insurgency is damn fun when you can get a good team together that follows orders when you're under the squad leader role.

Other than that the mod sucks on unorganized pubs.

The Beta version of CS you probably played was 7 or 7.1, just before it went to version 1.0. Insurgency is at Beta 2. I'd much rather play INS Beta 2 than CS Beta 2.

I agree i went too far. I was sexually frustrated and needed to unleash several loads. Forgive me.

All the best for INS in the future. I'm just expecting too much from the hl2 mod world. Nothing has floated my boat and i desperately want something to float my boat. Stastistics also suggest garys mod is the only mod that has really done some significant boat floating. Why can't we have some pure combat games that are that awesome.
