I must admit, as an AMD fanboy, this is a sad, sad day for AMD-kind. AMD has done very well in the last 8 years, and I would go so far as to say that they have held the performance (per watt/per dollar) crown fairly steadily over those years. With the release of Conroe today, at midnight, Intel has regained the performance crown after the years of the Athlon.

Conroe benchmarks/reviews can be had at the following links:

Tom's Hardware
Anandtech
Xbitlabs

Enter the Conroe... see you in 2008, AMD!

Probably, but i'll wait for a game worth upgrading for first.

How about Crysis? That'll cover the CPU upgrade as well as a GPU upgrade

Seeing as i have a 939 motherboard and 2gb or DDR ram, i shan't be chucking them in favour of conroe. I'll be sticking with the guts of this machine for a while, and most probably upgrade to a dual core AMD once the price drops have ocurred.

I am impressed by the conroe however, and wish i had the money to throw away half of my pc and get myself a conroe !!

Sure, but now isn't the time to buy a cpu for Crysis. I'll wait untill a few weeks before the game I want to upgrade for (probably Quake Wars) comes out and then buy the best hardware I can afford - which'll certainly be better or cheaper (probably both) than if I buy now.

I wouldnt say Im sad, this could only lead to good. Price wars, amd pumping out new technologies ect. Well just have to wait and see.

I'm completely satisfied with my 3800+ X2, and won't need to upgrade for years.

I would love to upgrade to Core 2 Duo! ;(
But sadly I'm already invested in DDR platforms.

1999 Athlon over took the Pentium 3 for the performance crown
2002 (3 years later) Intel had the faster CPU (Pentium 4 2.2GHz vs XP 2000+) but AMD still held the better performance/price ratio. But in May 2003 (1 year later) Intel releases Pentium 4 C with 800FSB and HT to claim the crown down to mainstream CPUs.
Sept 2003 (1.5 years later) AMD releases Athlon 64/Opteron
July 2006 (3 years) later Intel releases Core 2 Duo to regain the crown

So AMD has had the performance crown for more than 5 of the 7 years since 1999 yet Intel claimed it for less than 2...
Intel really needed to leap frog AMD at some point. lol
Though they need to both leap frog faster! Like the graphics card market. :D

Yes, I guess you're right... I was thinking Athlon XP came out in '98 for some reason... and I was too lazy to figure out if Intel's P4 had ever had the performance crown in any way.

Thanks for remembering...!
