So to beat AMD even harder, Intel's new i7 chips (Based on S-1366) are due to be released tomorrow 11/17/2008.
(I don't know if this has been covered and I'm too lazy to look) What is everyone (Who is up for upgrades) thinking?
According to Tom's Hardware. These things are pretty massive.

Share your thoughts. Me, ...I only read one review and I'm either sold or turned off. In this case, I'm definitely sold.

What do you think?

I think they're great and not too expensive compared to current quad cores. Only thing that's really holding me back is the price of the motherboards. The motherboard is as expensive as the 920 is. Then add expensive DD3 memory and you're looking at spending at least 500 eurobucks on a CPU upgrade. I'm probably buying a whole new PC within the next month, and I'm not too sure if I want a Core i7 and might go for a Core 2 Duo E8400, but that chipset has absolutely no future =/

I agree with the comments above. Mighty impressive, but too expensive to be worthwhile right now. Once the prices come down, motherboards especially, they might be a consideration. I've been waiting to upgrade the core of my rig for a while, but i won't be paying 500-600 just for motherboard/cpu/ram when i could have gotten a quad core 775 setup for more like 300.

I assembled a PC with the X58 and 920 at work today, and man these things are blisteringly fast!

I haven't run any actual tests on it yet. But the feeling I got from it in Server08, in terms of application load times (on 15k drives) and running processes such as SQL server and Terminal server on virtual machines on only 4 gb of ram was absolutely awesome.

Can't wait to get one for myself that's for sure.

The only turn off is, as most of you already said, MB pricing, which is way over the top at the moment, simply because there aren't many MB for S-1366 out there, and the only option we have is either this MB or that, nevertheless, those chips are pretty attractive.
Wait till enough MB inter the market, and the competition start, and then we can bargain.

From what I've heard, the X58 motherboards (the only ones available now for the i7 if I recall correctly) will not drop in price much as they're "high end" motherboards. There will be mainstream boards, but they won't be able to run the current i7's, but only the "mainstream" CPUs based that are yet to be released next year. So summary: want an i7? You're forced to buy an expensive motherboard.

That's what I've understood though. Might be wrong. But if it's true, I definitely won't get an i7. Still doubting between a Core 2 Duo and a Phenom though. While the Phenom is definitely slower, the Phenom 2 will be able to run on current motherboards and the news about the Phenom 2 is pretty positive so far.

Don't count on anything until there's trustworthy benchmarks.

I'm still running an Athlon 3800+ with a 7800GT, and although I'm still quite satisfied with performance in my games, this stuff is pretty interesting. Some of the CPUs seem to hit a very good price point, but as everyone is saying, I'm a little concerned about the price of the motherboard.
