I have just been playing through half life 1 again, this time paying particular attention to detail (instead of shooting all the baddies:afro: )
and i have seen a couple of interesting ideas.

Firstly does Gordon have a family?
If you look in his locker there is a picture of a baby. Any idea why?

Secondly is Gordon set up by the administrator (be it the Gman or not).
When you talk to the scientist dudes b4 you go into the test chamber, they say something about the administrator wanting to go beyond what they had done b4, and he had 'somehow' got hold of that very pure mineral thing you put in the laser. So was the whole of halflife a set up to get Gordon to work for the Gman in City 17? :bounce:

not sure. im also going through halflife SP for the first time these past few days, even though i bought it when it first came out, i got carried away with MP

really good SP game so far :D

dont expect too much, youll get mad at the ending like i did. game hyped me up so much and then WHAM. i hope that dosent happen again in HL2.

Gordon Freeman is quite a new scientist when he comes to put the cristal in the laser. He should have been, huh, dunno, "moved" in this area to work with more experienced scientists.
I think Gordon doesn't have a baby... I don't know where, but I think it has been said.
You know, it's hard to understand the story of HL, because it's not written anywhere, and you have to "live" it to understand. And personnally, I didn't understand the whole thing when I first played the game, but now it makes sense to me...

let's wait for HL², I bet we'll discover lots of funny things about the original HL, things that we didn't already know.

end boss kinda sucked. in fact all of xen was a bit dull =\ they could have done better.

Well it would seem sort of illogical to create such an elaborate scheme to get a dude to work for someone. Seeing as how Gordon had no military experience...the odds of him surviving an alien invasion and a military cleanup crew were slim to none. Whoever this administrator is, he probably didn't count on Gordon surviving...just a pawn in his eyes. My guess is the g-man is the admin's lackey, and was given orders to put Gordon on their side after they saw his potential and survival ability. Not only brains but brawn as well makes a powerful asset for a world domineering force.

hmmmm, yeah that seems a bit more logical than my idea:cheese:

itd be cool though to get a job like gordons. he probably got a nice paycheck, and all he has to do is flip switches when told to eheh

If I had Gordon's job I'd piss my pants and crawl to the closest corner sucking on my thumb and sobbing like a little bitch. Invading aliens are certainly not a motivational tool for my career. I mean, can you honestly imagine how you'd actually respond if aliens like the ones in Half-Life 2 invaded our planet and were slowly taking over? One day you look out your window and see a bunch of dudes wearing gas masks and toting machine guns...rounding up civilians and taking them prisoner. Yeah, it's late here. My imagination is starting to get the better of me.

I hope Marc Laidlaw publishes a book based on Half-life. The story is very interesting i think, but not as in-depth as it could have been in the game.

there should be some backstory to justify gordons tactical firearm prowess. cant think of a convincing one at the moment, maybe his wife was murdered, and he took up firearms training after that, and he vowed to find this killer, and then when the aliens invaded it just gave him a good reason to let out all his pent up agression :/

You say that in jest I hope...I dunno if you'd be so quick to reach for daddy's pump-action if a Strider came strolling through the neighborhood.

I'd take Gordon's job... As long as I could be instantly healed by med packs scattered around the area in which I'm fighting, and also have an HEV suit thats protects me from practically everything. I'd also want a lot of ammo and some glasses like Gordon has.

Then I'd be ready to rock n roll.

as long as I had a gluon gun with an ac adapter. can you say infinite ammo?

edit: jmac, maybe YOU do, but you should see a therapist about that.

Heh heh...I can see a mod idea now...the wild aliens of City 17...you take a safari through the streets of it while a monotone British-speaking guide discusses mating habits of various alien species. "Now the dominant Strider prepares to mount his significant other."

i think your the only one who can see that mod idea ;)
pretty gross lol, but funny nonetheless ;x :dork:

I think the story is very interesting.. definately book worthy.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

I played through Blue Shift again the other day, and there's a lot of interesting dialogue in there that clarifies the events at Black Mesa...

Basically, the research facility was built to continue and expand on research into teleporter technology. What the scientists found, though, was that they couldn't accurately determine a target location. They discovered that there was a "border world" (xen) that was somehow involved in the teleportation process, and they soon discovered that the crystals found on xen were the key. So, they set up some machinery on xen that would intercept the teleportation "signals" from Earth, and utilise the crystal structures on xen to control and direct the rest of the teleportation process. So scientists knew about xen, and the aliens there, a while before Gordon's incident.

As teleporter technology got better, they began to realize that if they brought back samples of the crystals from xen, they could incorporate them into the teleporters, cutting out the need to have operational machinery in the border world. This is what they were trying at the beginning of HL - they were testing a new sample, the best one so far, in the hopes that they could produce stable portals without xen being involved. Obviously this went wrong, and the experiment's result allowed portals to be created from xen (and other worlds, as seen in opposing force) to earth.

In HL, there are places in the facility where teleporters were working properly, but they were over short distances, and we don't know if they were relying on equipment on xen or not. Perhaps the experiment Gordon was involved in was an attempt to create long range portals, using localised samples of crystal. If they had have pulled it off, it would have been a major step forward. Obviously, they didn't. Very interesting story if you ask me. And that's just scratching the surface.

"And then Gordon jumped on a box. From that box he was able to reach a higher box, and then he could just reach the ladder coming down from the vent. Pulling himself over the edge, Gordon gasped as he saw a head-crab preparing to strike. In an amazing show of grace and power, Gordon whipped out his shotgun and fired into the head-crabs body.
"Aliens, 0, Gordon, 5,834" he thought to himself.
Gordon continued to pull himself through the ventilation shaft, finally coming out the other side. There, to his surprise, he saw...boxes."

Have you no imagination at all?

Speaking of boxes, I hope that whatever boxes they DO have are easy to destroy. Nothing annoyed me more than those weird boxes that took like 20 hits to destroy.

My roommate, who doesn't play games, was watching me play HL1 the other day, and then again today. He says,"Ok, so is this game all about destroying boxes?"

I think at the beginning of the Half Life manual it says that since Gordon has no family or dependents, he will be living at the Black Mesa facility. I'm not sure about the picture in his locker, it might have been one of the Valve staff's.

I wouldn't say that Gordon was set up all the way through, but as he survived by accident against all the odds, they decided to use him "up ahead".

And after the black mesa accident, if i remember correctly, there is ONE locker door OPEN..could this be the name of the person responsible?
I found this quit interesting..

That's what I guessed.

My theory is that G-Man simulated the invasion by causing the test-chamber incident to teleport in the aliens, and making it seem that Nihilanth was the source.

With Nihilanth looking like a massive threat, Earth folks would definately try to take him out, so G-Man sends the military in, in the hopes that they would find their way to Xen and kick Nihilanth around for him.

Unexpectedly, Gordon proves to be more successful than the military when it comes to L337 killing skillz, so the G-Man checks up on him every once and a while, and guides his progress. At the same time, Corporal Shepard from OP4 gets pretty close to Xen under G-Man's watch, but never makes it there.

After Nihilanth dies, G-Man hires Gordon, and takes over the slaves now that thier master is dead. G-Man then nukes the base to cover up the evidence, and stop any more aliens from warping, since he doesn't need them anymore.
Shepard is considered almost as useful as Gordon, and is kept in storage for later. The End.

Now, in HL2, Gordon and the slaves battle the combine for some reason, with G-Man commanding them along the way.

Possibly... :p

After reading through this whole topic while listening to Massive Attack's 'Special Cases' , I suddenly realize Half Life's story is one of the most complex stories ever used in a game. :D

I hope that Good Ol' Shepard will be co-starring in HL2, that'd be really cool if he stood face to face with Gordon in a silent frozen moment.

yes, but what about Shepard?? maybe Shepard was used to train gordon this past 15 (or whatever) years before HL2 and after HL1!!! Creepy....

Can we say Max Payne, people?
Well, if you replace aliens with mafiosa.
Personally I agree with Daemon and Mechagodzilla. Except about the bit where the slaves are taken over by the G-Man. I think, seeing as Freeman killed their master, they were set free and agreed to join forces with them (Freeman, the Vances, the G-Man et al).
I really don't think the whole thing was set up to test Freeman, though. Why would it be? Dude's a scientist in his early twenties with a silly goatee and NHS glasses. That theory all seems a bit Truman Show-esque but without a third of the logic.

Nope. If Freeman experiences it, then we will experience it. This is the way HL works.
