Hi there.

I'm having to use a friends account to get onto the internet to post this concern with Half-Life 2.

I purchased the game, and after installing, I had to connect on the internet. Now I don't have an Internet account simply because I happen to be one of the many people out there who can't afford it the 50 dollars a month for a dsl...and logging in by telephone is just not my cup of tea even though it only costs 9.95 a month, is just not good for gaming period.

Anyway, why would any company go in this direction for a game. They seem to have done something that just makes me shake my head...I'm baffled by Valve, and their decision to have updates by logging into Steam, and having to loggin to steam to play offline.

What in the name of God were they thinking when they came up with this concept.

I can understand why people are really annoyed by this because Valve in my opinion really took my money, and told me to bugger off (if you don't have the internet, tough luck pal, but thanks for your money). Now, I went back to the local store where I purchased this game, and I explained too them what has happened, and they told me if I didn't read the box, and I didn't have the peoper specs, then sorry pal, thanks for your money, and tough luck. I did read the box, and I have the system specs, but I never picked up on the steam issue until I installed it.

I sat in my car afterwards, and really contiplated on taking my car keys, and scratching the surface of the CD just so that I could get a refund...but that wouldn't happen because all they would do is replace it with another copy....

btw=> I just read a post about a guy taking his computer over to a freinds house to get it registered by Steam, but every month you have to do this....WHAT???? I am not going to dismantle my computer once a month, haul it over to a freinds house just so I can play a game that by rights allow me to play anytime I want too, in my own home....Valve, if you are in any way able to read this message stop SMOKING crack!

SO, my question is...HOW DO I play it offline?????

bye for now...please help

To play OFFLINE you must be ONLINE first to be able to select OFFLINE. Then you have to go ONLINE again to patch the patches that haven't properly patched the bugs. Once you have played OFFLINE for a while, Steam will suddenly demand that you go ONLINE again. Only then can you continue to play OFFLINE.

simple. :hmph:

lmao!

sigged :D

Check the box next time.

It said clearly internet connection required in the minimum required specs.

internet connection written in tiny tiny writing on the back of the box is NOT clearly written, clearly written is a large sticky label on the front saying THIS GAME REQUIRES INTERNET CONNECTION TO PLAY.

'deliberately small and easy to miss in order to gain more sales but within the bounds of the law' is how it is written.

woot for capitalism \o/

Yes it does, and your right...it's small. Most people just read the requirements that pertain to their system specs (horsepower, video, and memory). Having the internet required printed so dang small, no wonder I didn't see it.

Well, if there was ever a crack for the game, I wouldn't hesistate to use it. If the crack was for steam, I wouldn't use it.

I just want to play single player. I hate to have to take a maginfing glass with me when I have to go, and buy games, and thats pretty cheesy of Valve to con people like that.

Oh well, I have been stung for over 50 dollars, so I guess I'll be very careful when seeing anything from Valve because at the moment, I feel like I have been stolen from....so if Valve is so concerned about having their software being stolen, then why are they stealing from me? I guess if they can steal, they then deserve to have their software stolen from them. I work just as hard for my money as they do, so what makes their money more important than mine?

Just annoyed.....

It's the first single player game EVER to require internet, that fact should be made as prominent as possible on the box.

in an ideal world.
but not this one.

Now I'm just a little curious, a little confused. Of course we all know that it's required to have an internet connection to get the game verified and such. So do you need to -always- be connected to the internet to play single player? I've studied only a little into the whole steam process and I've read about the offline and such deal. But I was just wondering if you always had to be connected to play. Since my gaming computer also doesn't have internet connection, could I just run off to a friends house with the pc get it all done through his internet, bring it back home with no connection and enjoy? If so, I'm ok with it. If not, that just sucks.

It has been claimed from the start that you can play offline. In practice however, Steam sometimes gets a bug up it's ass and decides it wants to connect before letting you continue offline.

In short it's an online app that can be used offline until it decides to go online again. any clearer? :D
