Internet Extremely slow

ok, i just started having this problem, i have high speed internet and i used to load pages in the snap of a finger basically but now, when i try to load up a page it says it's timed out and it takes forever for the browser to find the website, it's really just a drag to have such slow internet when it is supposed to be high speed.
The browser i use is mozilla firefox, cable internet. If anyone has any solutions or solution at all that would be greatly appreciated.

what ISP?

got a firewall?, checked for spyware, checked your service status, checked the cables, settings, browser settings.

could be a DNS problem, try connecting to ip addresses only and see if that makes a difference, if it does its the ISP end most likely.

I don't have a firewall, i checked for spyware using spybot and adaware and removed everything it found, i also checked for viruses and there was none. i don't know what you mean by dns problem though...

Call your isp. If its not your computer, it could be corroded cables, or a problem with your local tap.

Ok this is the third time I will write this.

Turn off or unplug any internet related hardware
wait 1 minute then plug everything back in.

I have all my PC stuff pluged into a powerstrip. I just hit the switch, wait 30 seconds or a minute and flip the power back on, then boot up my computer.

This always works for me.

I don't have a firewall, i checked for spyware using spybot and adaware and removed everything it found, i also checked for viruses and there was none. i don't know what you mean by dns problem though...

a DNS server is basically just a system that keeps a record of host names (dot coms, dot net etc.) and where their supposed to point, that sits between you and the internet via your ISP. So when those go down your unable to connect to a domain eg halflife2.net because it doesn't know where its supposed to go. If you've added the domain to a particular ip address in your hosts file, it mostly wont effect you, but you can't do that for every site you'll visit.

You can get local DNS servers that just run as a service and your PC checks locally before trying your ISP's server. I set one up on my other machine cause NTL had a lot of DNS problems way back last year so it helped a lot when they were always going down.

Try it, type 66.102.9.104 into your browser (its google, its safe) if it connects quickly while typing www.google.com doesn't, then its likely the DNS server thats down. Though it could be other things too.

Also get that MS spychecker program, its actually as good as people say and does catch things spybot and adaware miss.

oh and INSTALL A FIREWALL! really, your asking for trouble not having one installed and you can expect to have your PC screwed up, no ifs or buts, it'll happen. right now your wide open to the rest of the world.. Right now anyone on this site could download some little program and take control of your PC completely, and your network if you have one. So really, you NEED a firewall.

ok, what would you suggest, i was using zonealarm since it's free but i reformatted and didn't reinstall it, i want a good free firewall do know of any?

sygate is pretty good, but the paid for version has a lot more useful features.

Alright Thanks, i was also wondering how to save my favorites i have on firefox, i can't seem to find where they're located. Can you tell where they are at, by the way thanks for all the help everyone.:cheers:

in bookmarks, it is a bit strange to get used to if you just come from IE, but its basically the same, and easier to move them around and organise.

you could also get a router, use that with a firewall aswell and all the other things, good security, though bliink knows about that stuff better than me.

well what i wanted to do was save my bookmarks onto a disk so that i don't have to try and remember all of them. how would i locate them in "my computer"?

c:\program files\mozilla firefox\defaults\profile\bookmarks.html

or something along those lines, keeps them all in a single file

Im not sure of your OS but Windows XP comes with a firewall.

Mabye it's a virus,do a virus cheak and get a firewall,I would suggest using Norton.

Bwahaha, Norton is on the bottom of my list (along with others). Get something that works for you, your PC, and your wallet.

A simple combination of AVG Antivirus and Sygate will work great! Both are free :upstare:

PS - Sygate Pro will eat your children
