Okay guys, your favorite (or maybe not) Russian pessimist is back with another rant. But before I star, everyone check out my new “Christmas themed” avatar. Yay for me!
Anyway, I remember, around 5 years ago, when I lived back in Russia. I didn’t have internet, because it was too expensive, $1 per hour! I remember going to the store, getting myself a game, blind buy. All the information about the game was read by me from the back of the CD box, and that’s it, beyond that I knew nothing about what I was getting. Funny thing, I ALWAYS enjoyed the games I was getting. I didn’t care if it was complex enough, or what kind of graphics it had, I just played it because it was fun. Plus I had a console, SNES, and I was playing that too, without any problems. That was when I enjoyed actually playing games without trying to find faults in them at every given time.
Then I came to America, where streets are made out of gold and… Anyway, I got the internet, I started to read forums, I got spoiled. I find myself now spending most of the time worrying about by whom game was made, what kind of lighting system it has, was it “dumped down” or not, than playing actual game. When I start the game itself, I am searching for the faults, playing with the settings all the time (OMFG AA is not at 6! OMFG, DEATH!!!11) and just having miserable time. I think internet turned me into the sad gamer, to the point where I can’t even enjoy games anymore. I spend more time waiting for the game, but when it finally comes out, I get bored from it very fast. I now have such low attention span as a gamer.
So guys, any of you have the same problems or is it just me? Are we truly spoiled so much, that there is no way going back to be a casual gamer? Are the games actually bad now or are we just expecting something impossible from developers? I remember playing Donkey Kong Country for 4-5 months straight without getting bored. What the hell happened?
