Hello,

I am Addicted(James), The leader of the HL2 mod 'Invasion: Pluto Landing'.

Most of you wouldn’t have heard of this mod because it has just started, but that doesn’t mean it will stay like that .

**Yes I did post that mod like this that I wanted to make...But I went back into thinking**

Story:

Name: Invasion: Pluto Landing
Humans finally make it to the cold and what they think is lonely Pluto, where there is rumored to be water underneath the thick ice. When they get there they find that something else has been there, so they decide to search around. After about a week of searching they find some sort of advanced aliens. They find most of them dead with structures destroyed. The world soon realizes it is not alone....

But they had to complete their mission that they were sent to do. They had to find if there was water on the small planet. They started drilling into the ice and after a few days they made it to what seemed to be water. But what they didn’t know was that there was another kind of alien living under the ice in the water...

They sent a fish type robot with a camera build in down the small hole they had drilled. After swimming it around for a while they began to see dark objects in the distance...The fish started shaking...Then they saw white flashes in front of the camera...Then it just went blank....

So far that is the story line. We are still working on it and plan to get it finish along with the documentation within the week.

New mission:

The people sent to Pluto now have to eliminate all the alien creatures.

Transmission:

"...By the looks of it I would say we have 3 different races...The what seems to be Pluto race, some other sort advanced alien race and...I would think a protector...I mean how else would the Advanced aliens die?...They looked too powerful to be killed that easily..."

Game types:

iv_gg_mapname - Gexlin (Advanced aliens) vs. Guardians
iv_xp_mapname - Explores vs. Pluto race

Info:

The Gexlins and Explores can build structures, such as defense, weapons factory and more.

The Pluto race and the Guardians cannot build, they can only upgrade...They both get their weapons from Pluto it's self so no need for building for them.

Concept Art:

A 5 minute sketch by our concept artist...His scanner broke so it’s been taken with a camera. Thanks to Corsair for this sketch.

Staff Wanted:

The Invasion mod is currently looking for staff to help us in completing this mod.
We are looking for the following:

Modelers

2D Artist/Skinners

Mappers

Coders

Concept artists

Some of these such as mapper and concept artist already have one position filled...But we need all the help we can get. So if you’re interested in helping this mod to completion please send me an email at [email protected] . If you have MSN that is even better because I would be happy for you to add me so we can talk further.

Thanks,

Hmmmm, its proberly not a good idea to say "I think..." in your post. People don't really want to work in a team that isn't certain about what they are doing.

You said your the leader but in your whole post you came across as having someone else in control.

The actual idea isn't that bad I supose. I don't think it would really make sense though. It really does depend on what you are wanting to do. Mods don't really have to make sense, but when you try to make them make sense when its pritty hard to actually do it comes out weird.

Your early alien concepts are very generic.

Soz if I came across a little strong, good luck.

I agree there. They're too star-trekky. Now, in my lawyeresque opinions, maybe you should attach some fur - Pluto's cold, and for any life to take place, there must be at least some heat. Insulation works well. And if they're waterborne creatures, wouldn't they have something to help propel them through the water, like webbing between their arms so they can glide like manta-rays? Ohh, and if you're doing a water-based ice planet, wouldn't it be better to choose Europa - one of Jupiter's moons? Scientists bet that if life exists outside our Earth, it will be on Europa, which is a moon that is covered in water, the topmost layer being frozen over. If you were to drill on Pluto, you'd never hit liquid water, just rock. Drill on Europa, and you'll get lots of water.

Random piece of information: Pluto and its moon continually face each other as they rotate/orbit, so the same of the planet always gets to see its moon continuously, and it's always seeing the same piece. And the nitrogen atmosphere freezes every so often, and comes down as snow.

Having scientific things interspersed with creativity create interesting settings.

Err...dude read my post properly..I didnt say I think...Its's a transmission...It is like a different person

I have never seen startrek...So I have no idea's from there...
should read this part...

So far that is the story line. We are still working on it and plan to get it finish along with the documentation within the week...
And I was taught not to just say I, because it looks empty..but if you say 'we' or words like that..It makes it look like it is full of people.
The documentation will explain everything so hold onto ur keyboards and wait ^^

You don't need to have ever seen star-trek to make star-trekish aliens. They're basically aliens which are almost human, apart from a minor change or two.

And you know Europa's the better candidate!

looks more like zelda...the zora people from there..Anyways thats just one type of that alien...There will be fat n shit ones, ect...It will look different that is more like a...rough copy..

I'll just say to not be afraid to step outside the box with creature design. Humanoid fishmen aren't specifically intimidating. Five-legged thorny things, with webbing between each limb, and a giant tentacle thing with a toothy mouth at the end of it instead of a head - now THAT will make your players panic.

thats true, but just look at all creatures, we all have something in common :p most inteligent species look like man because they have evolved. If the aliens where stupid maybe they would look like ants? or spiders? we got rid of all are other legs because they where not needed.

Hm..I get better feed back at other forums...Just not here...Can some other people post?

Yeah, but we're not in the extreme cold and we aren't in the water either. Oh, we didn't get rid of any limbs either, other animals grew more limbs but we never really got rid of anything except a tail.
An animal in a colder climate will be smaller, to conserve heat. It will have limbs that aren't very long, as it's hard to keep them warm. It would most likely have some sort of fur, or for underwater animals have a large coating of fat (think of a manatee).

And pluto won't work. It's just way too small for life to evolve on, and there isn't any liquid water on it. Not to mention the atmosphere. Although it would be possible for life to grow there probably, it would not be like anything we know and would most likely be microbial.

Make it on Europa, angry lawyer is right :D

Well, think about it. Apes didn't just apear. They all grew from bacteria. I find it very hard to believe Apes just grew straight into there form. I wouldn;t be suprised if they had many different forms.

The reason most Earth-life have similar traits is due to the fact that, at one point, we all developed from the same anscestor. Think of a family tree diagram, except with species instead of people. On another planet, they wouldn't share our common ancestor, so there would be very little chance they'd turn out humanoid.

If a species of life were to develop on Jupiter, they'd have to have a very thick skeletal structure (or exoskeletal structure), and would likely travel by increaing and decreasing their pressure, like a submarine travelling to different depths. So, intelligent life on Jupiter would plobably look like a cross between a jellyfish and a blimp. Although, without anything solid to make things out of, it's unlikely they'd have any technology.

In the case of Pluto, the creatures would likely be able to put themselves into a natural stasis, to survive the massively long periods of time where the atmosphere freezes, and comes down as snow. Or, they'd do something other than breathe - there's not much atmosphere at the best of times. Possibly filter stuff from the rocks. And due to the lack of light on Pluto (the sun appears as a distant point of light), chances are, they'd not have developed eyes. And sonar is out of the picture, due to the minimal atmosphere to carry the sound waves. Maybe using a radar-like system, bouncing em waves off of surfaces, to find their way, or feeling vibrations from the ground, or just using the good old feeler-tentacle method.
The bodies of the creatures would likely be rather elastic, and low pressure, to match the atmosphere. Which means they'd be crushed by the weight of our air if they invaded our planet, unless they had special low-pressure suits. Oh, and they wouldn't need very powerful legs, because they could just bounce everywhere in the low gravity environment.

Damn, I love scientific debates. So much fun.

you guys dont see too get the story line...why is it that your 'enemy' community (hl2fallout) understands stuff more?

"Enemy" community? I thought everyone who's waiting for HL2 is a mutual friend, simply because we're all obsessed on the same thing.

Good luck with your mod anyways. I guess I'm just not into the Zelda 'Zora' style much.

Don't let the naysayers get you down. I'm sure your ideas will evolve as the development progresses. If you are offended by the comments being posted, it's time to started getting some thick skin. Whenever you submit a supposed original idea to the general public, they will always respond in the negative. It's the way things get done.

Judging by the list of people needed, it looks like you dont' have much more than an idea to build on. I'd also like to recommend not worrying about a concept artist at this point. They are a godsend for a professional who can afford them, but when it comes down to it, all you need to do is be good enough to send an idea to the mod team and let them build models and skins. Even a half-ass artist should be able to sketch good enough for that.

Mods are very time-consuming and tedious. Much more work than simple mapping. Plus you will be working with the newest SDK, which , while being touted as one of the easiest tools around, is still brand new and there won't be much help in the form of archived tutorials and such.

Keep spreading the idea and get some others signed on. And try to understand the point of view of the critics. Use their comments constructively. It's no good to ignore, it's much better to use them as much as possible. Who knows, maybe some inspiration will strike you and you will have a critic to thank for it! I love irony.
