Developer Ion Storm seems to be "in transition"

According to TTLG sources, and confirmed by ShackNews, the Austin-based studio has just seen the layoff of 20-25 people. Warren Spector has also left the company, and the rumour is that the studio's name will change.

I'm sure there's a word like "restructuring" for this sort of thing, but to me it is called "Game Over"

Warren Spector Leaves ION Storm [11:13 am]

Multiple sources tell us that all is not well at Deus Ex & Thief 3 developer ION Storm. Apparently some 20 - 25 people have been laid off at the Eidos owned Austin based developer. That's not all though as Warren Spector is said to be leaving the company as well. If we receive any more details we'll be sure to post them.

This is odd. They just released Thief 3...

Discuss.

Well, Eidos has a lot of financial problems right now, so they start to cut things. To shame, because Thief 3 is a worthy sequel after all, but people will sure remember ION studio for one shitty game they made, ala Deus Ex 2.

Oh well, here is a hope that Warren will open his own studio, without damn pressure from big publishers.

Mr.Reak, Ion Storm also released Daikatana...

anyway, it's unlucky on those who lost their jobs. i only hope that Warren Spector starts his own dev studio, or teams up with some ex-Looking Glass employees and starts churning out quality games like he always has done.

i can see Ion Storm losing their credibility in the PC market after Thief III. they'll likely become a console only dev.

that was ION STORM dallas, they were horrible.
Spector is in ION STORM austin.

Theif III is very good from what I've heard. And Deus Ex Invisable War was true to it's quality predecessor :)

You're in the absolute minority with this belief, sorry Badgey :)

right you are. i just wanted to correct Mr.Reak's "one shitty game" comment ;)

Badger you're a crazy fellow. (not wanting to start a long discussion about this, but...) in a nutshell, what makes DX:IW as good as it's predecessor?

I love DX:IW. Hey, Badgey, let's move underground and play Thief III and DX:IW all our lives. :D

I haven't really played the original, but DX2 is really, really mediocre.

i back you up on all of that, badgy. DE:IW is kewl ,and im DLing the theif 3 demo now.

hahahahhaaha back at you, abom ;)

I think this this will probably be a good thing in the long run, as much as it sucks now. :o

DX: IW doesn't even hold a candle to Deus Ex. It's such an inferior game, in almost everyway.

Specter of a Spector Departure? [May 28, 2004, 2:35 pm EDT] - 52 Comments

Shacknews is reporting that "multiple sources" inform them that Warren Spector "is said to be leaving" ION Storm, reporting the Austin Texas-based developer has also laid off 20-25 employees. Ion Storm Implodes is the headline on a similar story on IGN, which reports on the layoffs, as well as Eidos' explanation that this was a normal staff reduction associated with the completion of the pair of game projects that were underway at ION, quoting the publisher as dismissing the idea that Warren was laid off as well, though they don't actually come out and say he did not quit. They have yet to receive a reply from ION Storm, but this was Eidos' response to questions about Warren's departure:

"Ah rumors... well that sounds like a good one... but it is just a rumor," said the representative. "He certainly has not been laid off."

Hmmmmmmmm...

worse yet, shack news is reporting Warren might stay, and that they may become a Playstation 2 exclusive developer, Personally I admire Ion Storms dedication to delivering story driven games after the gaming community seems to have become bland and unorginal. The sad thing is it appears often times that they never have anyone playtest there games. Ion Storm seems to release glitchy buggy and flawed software all the time and not do a god d4mn thing about it.

well this gets a big WTF
