The RrF forums have started to get spammed.

I placed an IP ban on the spammer's account.. but then he/she was able to come back :(

does an ip ban work for dynamic addresses?

Ignore them, they'll get bored and go away.

What ever you do, don't lower yourself to their level.

No. Find the part of the IP that is the same in the all the addresses (usually the first two sets of numbers) and ban 999.999.*.* (replacing the 9s with the proper IP, obviously).

Actually... we had 6 more sign up... and I think they're all different people. Anybody heard of Depodra?

Well, we ended up deleting all the accounts, and placing an Admin Review on every new member.

*Sigh* Once again, through no fault of my own, I have been banned. You see, I have a dynamic IP address, and banning the subnet would result in me being banned, if the person you ban is on my isp.

Lets review. If you ban an IP, it can prevent inncoent people (Even members) accessing your board. Also, if the spammer is using a proxy, they can get round it easily.
If you ban by email, it takes about 10 seconds. It will take the spammer 10 mins or so to create a new hotmail account (Or whatever) and sign back up to your board. Just ban the emails and they will get board before you do.

Or have a domain with a catch-all address? Also, there are sites that allow you to have one-use throwaway addresses. In my experience, banning by email address is the least efficient way of going about it. And I can assure that as far as this site goes, if we're banning a subnet we will do everything we can to stop other people being caught out by it, and if they will we will find other ways of dealing with the problem.

I'm not saying its efficient, I'm saying its the only way to remove someone without blocking legit users. If a site admin is prepared to do that, its up to them, but I would never, ever do that with any of my sites.

sometimes, there may be no way to truly ban someone if they want to come back. my ISP for example(SBC yahoo dsl) can give me a totally new 4 numbers, not just a new 3rd or 4th digit when i get a new ip.

i dont know how the forum software works, but even if they get a new IP, their hostname(use nslookup or traceroute) should be the same. so for example nslookup to me always yields *chic01.pacbell.net which encompasses a small amount of people in the california northstate area using SBC DSL. its a small amount, compared to how many people you would ban if you were banning entire subnets.
