In repealing the 1961 Defamation Act, the Irish government sought to expunge the worst excesses of Ireland's draconian laws restricting free speech, but in the process it has ended up making offending religious belief a criminal offence. Aside from a 25,000 fine (reduced from the 100,000 originally sought by the government), the new Defamation Act gives the authorities the power to stage raids on publishers: the courts may now issue a warrant authorising the police to enter, using "reasonable force," premises where they have grounds for believing there are copies of "blasphemous statements."'"

so I cant even buy a copy of the satanic verses? or does that only apply to catholicism. and really, then they wonder why christianity is such a target for criticism. We need Eejit's take on this as the source isnt that reliable

so you can beat the shit out of somebody and get a small fine, or you can have a discussion to which you discredit their beliefs and then have to pay 25K...

that makes perfect sense. sharia law anyone?

And this is why I won't be living in Ireland any time soon :p

can outsiders make fun of Ireland and their religions?? how do they deal with this internationally??
like if i were to write a book about how horribly stupid this law is, and say the Catholic church is retarded for worshiping dead statues and praying to Mary instead of Jebus, how will that play out??

blasphemer, HANG HIM!!!!!

Only in Ameri-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The catholic church has always had too much influence in the republic of Ireland.

The law:

In Ireland, blasphemy is prohibited by the constitution and carries a maximum fine of €25,000. A controversial law was brought into law on 9 July 2009 making blasphemous libel a crime for material “that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion; and he or she intends, by the publication of the matter concerned, to cause such outrage.”[16]

I'm pretty sure cows are sacred to Hindus. And we eat cows. But then, crazy Christians eat Jesus too and drink his blood.

HOW'S IT FEEL TO BE WORSE THAN AMERICA, EEJIT?!

I've heard this get debated on TV over here. It's immensely depressing and infuriating to hear some of the fallacies that get tossed off in support of this law.

It's even more sickening when you know that this has happened in spite of a huge recent backlash against the Catholic Church in Ireland. A probe into Catholic run schools and institutions found evidence of massively widespread child abuse. Abuse victims marched at demonstrations and all sorts:

My sense is that Catholicism still holds a significant proportion of the populace here in spiritual fetters. I think there is some strong silent support for this, particularly from the older generation who are inclined to mutter things like 'well this is still a Christian country...', a sentiment which hints at the biased, only-Christian-blasphemy-counts mentality behind the law.

Nothing would happen. You aren't living in their country so their laws don't apply to you. Same reason you can't get arrested by the USA for banging a 14 year old in Canada while living in Canada.

EDIT: Man, Canada is cwazy, they even allow lesbian sex at 14. Gay dudes have to wait until they're 18 though. Suckers.

so if someone say "that priest raped that kid!" the police will go "ok get to the car*handcuffs man*"

Fact of the Day: Before 2000, there was no age of consent for Lesbian sex in the UK.

They always used to say this was because no-one dared explain how women could do the nasty to Queen Victoria, but I expect that was BS.

^ That...

america is like a black person in the 60's...but now ireland is a white child rapist at san quentin. BYAAAHHHHHAAHAHAHA

As a christian, even I think this law can suck it. Only people who doubt their beliefs and are afraid that someone might disprove them would make these kinds of laws.

How's it feel not to understand the difference between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland Pat?

The ROI can be so dumb sometimes. I wonder if this will ever get challenged in the European courts.

They made a law in Florida that you cannot disparage our produce (fruits and veggies grown in the Sunshine State). I cannot remember when or if the law was knocked down by the courts, but free speech will eventually prevail.

^ What he said.

I was trying to think of the words to say it, but you said it for me.
