Is #4 Media Being Released Today?

Ok cool 2 hours it is.

I kinda wish they would just release the new media. :)

hmm...then they release the kleiner vid for sure

You guys mean a new High resolution video?

I imagine it will just be the Kleiner video, naturally. The question is whether they will also slip the next video into the cache file for us to hex.

i saw a quote that said that they would still do the pre-download thing but it would be harder to hack it.

this is turning into a game.

I think the next video is going to be harder to hex, valve took notice of us hacking up the cache file and probably encrypted the name or made it longer so it's harder to figure out.

Yeah true. The last time was just a test for us. We helped them debug. :)

I don't think Valve will make it harder to hack into the file, they're probably too busy with Half-Life 2 anyway.
I mean, why bother?

I agree with Kamakiri. There's a VERY good reason to bother. If someone can hex their cache or config files to make it look like they have legitimately purchased, say Half-Life 2, when they hadn't that would be a rather big concern for Valve. Ok, so it's different when the file is actually on your system compared to when it has to be downloaded from a Steam server. But enterprising hackers might be able to figure out a way.

Isn't that 2 different things we're talking about here?
I mean, ok if you hack info you already have at your computer, but hacking the file to DL software?
How can you be so sure that you're suppose to hack the cache-file to do that anyway?

Oh, BTW the 3rd movie is released on Steam now.
That means that we probably will have the forth movie in a couple of moments... :)

Yes they would. When asked about the hexing valve said it was just part of the fun. I think its great what they are doing, i dont know of any other companies like Valve which actually have fun and care about their consumers so much

Tricking a server into thinking you've purchased a game isn't as easy as hex editing a cache file. Your account information is being held on Valve's servers, and it would require ALOT more then just a simple change of a few file names to get the game. You'd have to do stuff that would get the FBI on your ass, get your thrown in prison, etc. Your account information is not stored on your computer.

Anyway, I think Valve is going to do something tricky with this next media release. They're probably going to make the file name a lot harder to find and change. I'm up for the challenge. ;)
