I was playing on a TF2 server earlier, and someone brought up L4D. Quite a few praised it, while some others held that it is "No way worth 45 bucks."

Is there anyone here who is not getting it? If so, for what reason? Price, content, quality, not fun to you, etc etc.

I wasn't going to buy it due to it's ridiculous price here, because of the exchange rate.

Bought it and eagerly awaiting its release. Could of been a bit cheaper though but It's by valve, has to be worth it.

I wasn't going to buy it until I played the demo for the first time yesterday.

I wasn't going to buy it. I played the demo. I'm going to buy it.

I know that I'm going to buy it. But not when...

Already bought it. All I have to do is pick it up on the 18th.

Actually, seeing the Australian price, I'll hold off buying it for a while.

The price felt a little high when I first heard it. But then I thought about things a bit more. Consider that since the release of HL2 Valve have given us, DoD:S, Ep1, TF2, Portal and Ep2. In recent years we've gotten used to cheap, small games from Valve but L4D is a bigger game than all of them and thus required more work and is priced higher.

While you kinda expect, what is essentially, a multiplayer game to be cheaper it's hard to dismiss L4D as just an expensive multiplayer game when it also contains a lot of demands common to singleplayer games. L4D has more maps than any post-HL2 Valve game and those maps have the detail and length of a singleplayer game. But those maps, as well as the game as a whole, also need the replayability of a multiplayer game and, when it comes to versus, the strategic depth for both sides. The co-op mode needs to have variations in pace and be balanced so that the hard points aren't impossible to overcome but aren't so easy that they lose the tension they try to provide. Versus mode needs to be balanced and fun, a task the becomes harder due to the disparity in strength of the two sides.

At release TF2 and Ep2 were $30, I think L4D is a bigger game that carries a lot of demands from both and is being sold for $45. I don't think that price is bad for what you are paying for and I think it will be easier to realise that once the full game is released.

It's not so much "It's not worth that much" as it is "I don't have the money" :D

I was actually ranting at the non-present people mentioned in the OP who think the price is too high rather than yourself :)

can't afford it right now... if anyone wants to buy it for me I'd be happy to play with them D:

This Top Secret poll isn't so secret after all.

*snickers*

I already pre-ordered it but had to cancel the pre-order thanks to unexpected phone bill.... Life's a bitch :f

Was considering holding off, but L4D has jumped to my no.1 spot now I know I can run it without an upgrade.

My brother already pre-ordered.

I know someone at work is holding off purely because so many games have just come out in the last 2 months and he doesn't want to buy it until he's completed the rest. But I think he is going to get it at some point.

There's one other guy who's not getting it immediately because he thinks, even after playing the demo for an hour, it's 'just like CS'.

Left 4 Dead being such a social game between groups of friends means alot of people may pick it up post release due to word of mouth and other factors (such as price cuts whatever), also valve keep repeating this view they have that game releases are less about the street date and more about continued support and a regular update cycle.

They have said that the preorders for L4D are almost double that of the orange box, I put this down to the fact the Orange Box braught in alot of fresh blood to valve games, and people know what to expect in the long run, pretty much all my friends picked up TF2 post release because I wouldnt shutup about it.

Hell of a lot of fun with buddies.

Loving the game, but I don't have the funds yet. Maybe I'll get it for Christmas.

It's also due to the $10 million investment in advertising this time round, which is a clear indication they wanted to reach more people with the orange box than what they did. Sure the PC market is fully aware, but to venture out into much large profit margins taking a large portion of console sales it integral for Valve's growth. Don't see it as a sell out mentality, it's quite the opposite, they are a business after all. Inevitably Valve will continue to get bigger and take on a larger workforce perhaps, and in a couple years time, I bet you they get larger continental divisions and a higher turn out of games. The hope is obviously that the quality doesn't get sacrificed through this transition, but I'm confident they are a cornerstone in Valve's development process.

One of the main issues with the orange box is a TF2 community no where near as active and established as on the PC market. I'm not sure how the 360 community is surviving but I know the PS3 one is non-existent. Valve have said it's mainly due to kids hosting servers, 16 people joining, the major lag = people quit and don't come back / lack of ability to reach everyone with the updates. This time round they've supported the community for Left 4 Dead by providing countless dedicated servers for the console gamers (And they've pulled out of PS3 for the time being).

Actions like that show how Valve a really trying to support the console market too. They've put a huge investment to tell the world about Left 4 Dead, and with the pre-order stats it seems to have a massively positive effect. Because of this I'm almost certain we will see a very different approach to Episode 3 and whatever comes along with it. Valve will put focus on replicating this process as they did with L4D I'm certain, getting huge pre-orders. I have no idea what the 'ambitious' idea Doug Lombardi mentioned is, but its going to cause a stir. Sure Episode 3 will sell itself with everyone left in suspense & everyone's love for the story, but there will be...something else.

Not at the moment. I am saving up money for the holiday season so i can still buy my family gifts.

What do you think?? Of course i will buy it!!!
But first when the full game will be released.

I have Amazon to thank for my ?21 copy of L4D included with box.

It's too expensive..I can't afford a full price game right now. I had hoped it would be 20..or 35 at the most, so needless to say I was shocked by the price they wanted. But right now I'm swamped with bills, I'm looking for a new job because the last one didn't work out, and trying to make due with the money I have now. Maybe i'll get it for christmas but until then I'll have to keep playing the demo

I ordered it within the first couple days it was up for pre-purchase.

I also used it as a reason to rebuild the computer :)

I'll probably just end up asking for it around Christmas time. I've only got enough money for one game and GoW2/Mirror's Edge take priority.

I won't be buying it. In the run up to release, I somehow stayed completely untouched by the hype-infection... which isn't some kind of boast - it actually made me feel kind of sad. I wanted to be able to look forward to Valve's Next Big Game, but the idea of it just didn't appeal to me at all.

Having now played the demo my attitude has sweetened slightly. It seems like a laugh. Still, it just doesn't feel entirely like my type of game and I certainly can't imagine playing the demo for 5+ hours at a time like some people have.

For me it doesn't even seem like coming close to being a TF2-beater, so the idea that it should cost over twice as much is not appetising.

Plus I'm addicted to the Football Manager 2009 demo  So if I'm going to buy anything in the near future it'll probably be that.

I'm having a real blast with the demo right now in co-op but I don't think I'll buy it just yet. I prefer to wait a few weeks after it's been released to see what people really think when the hype has calmed down.

Price is a tad too high :(

I'll be buying it eventually.
Atm, the price is a bit too steep for me.

They honestly should have sold it for $40, seeing as it's just not enough variety in gameplay to need a $50 pricetag.

I haz bought it.

Any idea when it goes Gold?

It's the normal price for a game ya cheapskates.

Gonna check retail before steam. But yeah probably would buy it anyways.

Bought it ages ago. I've been following is since it's announcement.

I love me some TF2. But a couple of things to note. I would have gladly payed $50 for TF2 alone. I have put 300 hours into that game and combine that with Portal and Ep2, it made the OB the deal of 2007.

I have the feeling L4D is going to have the same time return investment as TF2 has for me. I am looking forward to it.
