Here's the thing: I have thought that I will not buy HL2 through Steam due to the unsafty to buy with credit cards over internet, but it seems like CE are not coming until december(here in Sweden at least), so I though I might just as well buy it over Steam. Is it safe and is there any way to make Valve pay you if it somehow goes to hell?

It's as safe as a credit card payment will be. Valve surely isn't going to play tricks, and if for some reason they can't deliver the game, they should be paying you back. Well... it's safe. They're a big company, not some frauds.

If anything goes wrong with the purchase, you have proof that you paid for it on your CC, and you can easily take it up with VALVe. You have my personal guarentee, however, that nothing will go wrong.

No, nothing online is 100%. You could have a trojan on your computer that could log your card number. Hell, you could have a keystroke logger.

The bank can also wire the transfer back. Although if not possible you are usually covered in situations like that. Well atleast on the money part.

I doubt it can be more secure than that, more encryption would be pointless, it would be easier to go from the local machine or the server itself. Well taken from a stealing point of view.

It is 100% safe to buy off steam

What lack of safety? All credit card transactions are protected agianst fraud. It's as easy as calling up your credit card company and telling them what's up. Not to mention, CC companies have built in protection, if suddenly a ton of out of your nature transactions occur. You'll get a call from the CC company going, "Are these yours?". Don't believe me? I purchased various components from online retailers on my CC. About $500 dollars worth. Got a call the next day. "We had some strange transactions on your account last night, could you verify these transactions please? So internet CC usage is perfectly safe.

You have a bigger chance of being mugged on the way to the store then you do of having your credit card information comprimised.

Yup. There is NOTHING 100%.....except death and taxes.....

I wasn't too happy with my Steam transaction. Lots of little glitches, sort of shakes your confidence. I wasn't too worried because it was only a $10 upgrade to Silver.

As far as I can tell, i'ts pretty damn safe. Just as safe as any other online transaction really. But it all comes down to your own sense of trust, really.

what i'm doing is buying it on steam THEN buying CE when it comes out (under guise of it being a xmas present for my brother (minus shirt, cap + guide)

it is 128 bit safer than, for example, ordering pizza on the phone and giving credit card number, over the unencrypted phone line, which many people do without second thought, but on the internet, with 128 bit exncryption, people consider it unsafe...

Think I lost my grammar in that sentence lol.

Point taken?

Safe.

If you have a citibank card, you can use the one time use virtual numbers. Thats what i use all the time.

That depends on where you live. I live in the city with the highest crime rate in the US(illegals are here to work my ass) and I have never been mugged.

But my card number has been stolen.

I would hope it is... I used two different credit cards for my two purchases.

No. It's not safe. As soon as you purchase Half-Life 2 over Steam, Valve immediately sends your credit card information, address, and any other prevelant information to various companies, whom then proceed to use said information and make purchases.

It's not safe.

lol!!!

I'd trust Steam. But then again, I'm really trusting.

I have bought a lot of stuff off of the internet, and payed for several MMORPG's with my credit card and never had a problem. Not only that, but Steam was also the easiest and smoothest of all the online transactions I have ever made.

when you are buying it it says that everything is encrypted
the only way it could go wrong is if you have spyware on your computer

That was before the Ressanonce Cascade :|

Yes, just as safe as buying of any other reputable site such as Amazon.

I even Go on the Lottery web site www.national-lottery.co.uk and put my numbers for the lotto and play abit of the instant wins games well play alot of the instant win games :E , and all you had to do is put your cred card in. So in my opinion it will be safe.

off topic abit but i dont spend alot in there so dont think ive got a problem with gambling lol im only £10 down.

back on topic

Buying over steam is as safe as walking into town with your wallet in your back pocket.

As safe as the world is evil.

got a question off topic ( not so much )
if i choose english language in steam i get game in english but hmm i pay in dollars ? oO
if i want to pay in euros ? D: !

You will be charged in euros for your purchase as the amount will be converted from dollars to euros at the daily interbank exchange rate.

I wonder if the news of the famous leak from Valve/Steam would sway people away from online purchases?

Of course, it's more than likely not Valve/Steam performing the transactions, but rather a bank...

I bought through Steam and i'm not worried...
