Can game companies lie to us in all their promo material about what is actually going to happen in their games?

Depends. If they lead you to believe the game will be the same as the promo material, and isn't then there may be some grounds for trading standards to look into it, but even just putting a tiny "Game may differ when played" type text on the bottom that you would never notice is enough to cover themselves.

Thinking of something in particular?

sure they can lie ...it's not like they are delivering a physical product that doesnt do what it's supposed to do ...it's like trying to sue a movie studio who claims their movie is the "best movie of the year" ..when it's actually crap

I think it would depend on the specific example. Anything in particular set this off?

how about the back of the old HL boxes? Seriosly, every screenshot there (Blue Shift box) has a screenshot not in the game.
Like those gold alien slaves that you see when installing Blue Shift? Where the hell did they come from?

That's the worst thing - when they claim it's the "most important game of 2005" or whatever.

God forbid the next person who calls whatever generic expansion for whatever game the "most important game of 2005/6"

ya but not from the hype some game reviewers were dishing out ...I mean some were saying how great it was but anyone who's picked it up for more than a minute can see how crappy it really was

Nothin really kicked this off, I was just wondering whether game companies can spoon-feed us bullshit from developement announcement to launch.

Like, conceivably the Next GTA could be about feeding small children sandwiches. It wouldn't sell, but if they continually hyped it up as 'The GTA to end all GTA's' then it might maybe get off an initial start...
