You must have at least 10 characters when making a post.
So, when someone types "No" or "Yes", they can choose to put "10 char lim" at the end to make up for the 10 characters. Basically it's just something people do on forums when they have less than 10 characters in their post.

They said they will unlock it on Steam if stores start selling early. Which might mean Nov 13 or 14. Hopefully. They will not, of course, unlock if the game gets out on warez scene

I certainly don't think that any retailer will be stupid enough to release early. However stranger things have happened. I was hoping that steam would release DOD: Source to tide us over until the release. This was before I realized how cool CS:S would be!

Sometimes warez are released 2 weeks before the store date. Though the Warez scene has been all weird and slow and farked up.

Groups aren't even getting the releases first. Just normal people 'noname' groups. lol

The feds (multi-national) busted the scene up big time a few months ago. Some groups were caught, others disbanded or went further underground.

When games are 'leaked' or released early, it's because a gold or beta copy of the game is leaked. But this case is different...what's on the gold disc is exactly what's on our hard drives...locked hl2 game files. So, getting a gold copy of the game doesn't get you anything new. The game still needs to be activated via steam in order to be played at all...not until ANYONE has an activated copy will there be any warez, and even then, it'll be a brutal battle between Valve and piracy (unless someone at Valve leaks the activated files/encryption...).

Halo2 was released just before/ after it went gold... Which was unfortunate, but I'm going to buy it when it's released for PC, so no harm done there.

I wouldn't be surprised if HL2 was close to being cracked, if not cracked already. Could be BS, but there are rumors that there are people who know what encryption method HL2 uses and have figured out the key.

But what also wouldn't surprise me is (of all things), I think the warez groups might actually hold off releasing HL2 until the last minute as a form of respect toward Valve. No matter what anyone thinks about the delays and so on, the fact that HL2 is going to be the best PC game ever demands at least some respect, dammit.

Actually, they have to wait until the last minute anyway don't they? There are still some crucial files missing from the preload.

Unless they steal what they need from the leak and modify it. :frown:

Those last few files might be a 1k authentication file thats it.

As soon as a store breaks the release date, steam will be unlocked. This is because some dude who knows nothing about hl2 might just walk into a store and buy it, and then go home and try to play it. They cant stop him from playing his property. Because of this, steam will have to be unlocked to allow him to play, thus doing it for the rest of us.

We all hope and pray for the first time ever that some dumbass store starts selling early. They always do, you always read 2 or 3 days before release that somone has bought the game from some obscure american gamestore. This time it benifits it all.

Sorry mate. He's right. 2 words: Online authentification. HL2 is unleakable. Its still pirateable, but its unleakable. Even if somebody gets a disc, they will not have all the HL2 files.

This is, as far as I can tell, the only valid reason to have online authentification at all.

Acctaully it's a 6-char limit, but everyone think it's a 10-char.
