Is School obsolete?

Schools in the United States have been getting kidish. The teachers don't teach to their full extent and they are not aloud to punish students using (The Paddle or whatever) to keep the kids motivated.

Actually this year in Florida they passed a law that lets teachers use corporal punishment again. If you don't know what that is it means they can hit you with a paddle or whatever. I seriously doubt any teacher uses it though.

I hope the teacher the teacher that hits me can run pretty fast. :)

I bet it was meant for elementary school mostly. I know if a teacher hit me they could expect to be hit back.

I didnt read everything in the thread, so this may seem a little random, at least in the context of what has just been said.

I do not think school is obsolete at all. As has been said, i think its more to do with ceratain schools being the problem. Perhaps the school system needs to be updated though. People said that you only learn anything good at uni, but at school you learn the basics of a whole wide range of subjects, rather than just getting into a one track mind, where you study only one or two subjects. Another tihng about school is, you make friends and learn people skills. A lot of people become frieds at school, simply because they go tot he same school and thats the only thing in common. I know a lot of people who didnt have any friends outside of school at all, imagine if they had never been...where would the be now?

Home schooling is great, but you need a teacher. For one thing, the majority of people simply dont have the focus to get down and work without someone telling them to, especially when they are only young.

lol, seriously schools more than obsolete. its become a moulding proccess turning us into working drones. Sounds like conspiracy, im full of that crap. Now I think about it I could of mastered in one subject which would be far more useful than doing so many other subjects along side each other

Oh clarky on the contrary, you are right. Schools do condition you into beleiving the only way is 60 years of hellish work and then you die. Its not, but thats all people believe now. However, the principle of schools is not obsolete.

However, i still dont tihnk mastering one subect over your entire life time is the right way to go. Yes ok, devote alot of your time to one thing, but learning about other stuff gives you a much broader view of the world, plus it keeps you adaptable to changes that come along.

that makes me sad :( I dont want to see future generations believing in that , afterall at that age your there to be programed (influenced) its like abusing there vulnerability, Agreed it needs some serious changes. then maybe there wouldnt be so much moaning about schools and pupil troubles.

I actually find it quite useful. I take a lot of AP classes, which are college level courses, so I take in a lot more than lets say a person just taking normal classes. Infact I've taken a normal class in High School before and I could have passed it if I hadn't even showed up it was so easy. If you're just taking normal classes in High School then the only thing you're doing is hurting yourself. But thats only to say if you don't have a hard time just taking normal classes. The reason schools offer different level courses is because you should know what level you need to take to challenge yourself. The AP courses should challenge you a little. I don't find them to be that hard but they're hard enough that I have to pay attention in class. But then there are some that are pretty difficult such as Spanish and Calculus. Infact I'm about to leave to school in about 5 minutes to go take my AP Spanish exam. Hope I do good ;). Wish me luck. Oh yeah, and I find High School to be an important step for my future no matter what it may be. Its probably the people with a poor school and poor teachers that feel school is useless and for them it probably is.

Yeah AP is usually more challenging... although I did really good on a couple of AP tests last year and i was a sophomore then--pretty funny because most of the people were freaking out before they had to take world history and i had just come out of biology and was going into world history next--totally calm since it's hard to make me freak out over a test. but high school courses aren't that challenging. geometry in 8th grade was more challenging than algebra2 and precal in highschool, probably because my 8th grade teacher actually taught us instead of force-feeding us nasty little processed formulas--like baby food, all processed and blended up and they force it in you and you wanna throw up......
[edit]why are you taking spanish ap now--aren't ap's in may?[/edit]

somebody before was talking about a discussing interesting stuff in class (sorry too lazy to go back and look up who said it)--the only class i've had that in was english last year, except we weren't discussing english stuff. sometimes my class just got way off topic and ended up discussing politics the whole class period--discussing the war in iraq, death penalty policies, etc. it was really fun.

and whoever said electives are worthless-- art was one of my favorite classes!! don't insult the electives!!
