is Sin as good as Half Life?

in response to the question in the thread title: no.

Nothing is as good as Half-Life. Try looking at some reviews of Sin: Episodes, Sin 1 also comes free when you buy it. I have it and beat it a few times and I'm very happy with it. The guns are great to shoot and the regular grunts make excellent enemies.

It's a well executed Run-n-gun shooter. But don't expect anything more, like a uber storyline.

Not even close, but its still a pretty good game. The cut scenes are ridiculously........awesome. (Anyone who played it would know)

Is there anything better than HL2 in Sin? What is the vantage of Sin (At certain respect)? Is there anything that Sin has but not HL2?

Sin has alot of boobies....plain and simple

Not really....Half Life 2 set the bar as far as graphics, story, and gameplay is concerned....Sin is just an old game redone with the magic of source.....So with that being said, Sin cant really be compared to HL in that respect. However, Sin has its moments and being the first game to be released in episodes....should offer something that most games in stores wont.

Yes, I am talking about that. But what are the things that "offer something that most games in stores wont"?

Well, basically.....storyline. Most games in stores give you whats in the box, and if you're lucky, a mod or two. Sin offers an array of new storylines, content, maybe a source multiplayer edition......theres alot of possiblity.....

The weapons on the other hand are kinda futuristic...the enviroments look pretty good, good cutscenes......its just a matter of you liking the overall dynamic.....hope this helps your decision

Sin has exploding heads. That's worth 20 dollars right there

In my opinion I think Sin is a pretty good FPS overall. It's gory, funny, and just plain fun; however, I don't think it's as good as Half-Life...that's a whole new level that Sin has to come to before it can be as good as HL.

Sin is mostly a step back in everything.

I respectfully disagree; but I assume you are referring to Emergence in
particular, and not the SiN franchise as a whole.

For my pre-load and pre-purchase of Sin: Emergence I also got the first
version of the Sin game (which I had never played before), and playing it
now I can see how the first episode is an evolution up from the style of
play in the earlier game (Chase the bad guy, kill the henchmen and monsters
in the way, avoid killing bystanders, etc...). But the new version is
several steps forward in a few ways, many based on Rituals decision to use
Source (and Steam) as their development and release platforms.

Comparing SiN to Half Life is like comparing RoboCop to Blade Runner.
They are both good Sci-fi films in their own right, but one is a slightly
campy action-adventure piece, while the other tries to go beyond the
action to interweave a deeper plot into the events that unfold.
(As episodic content, perhaps more like comparing RoboCop: The Series,
with Stargate SG-1).

I can think of a couple of things that made SiN, Eps 1 worth playing:

Voice Acting and supporting music: Ritual (like Valve) went to the effort
of getting the same voice actors for their roles as the earlier game where
possible, and put strong effort into using the facial animation system from
HL2 to make their reactions more interesting and realistic, which enhances
the scripted events even more.
The theme music created for the opening credits is worth a buck or two
all by itself, and helps set the stage for the episode as a whole.

Dynamic difficulty system: A method to enhance the initial enemy AI to
keep the game challenging, while also allowing Ritual to gather feedback
to help keep it fun to play thru, and to help with development of content for
later episodes.

Easter Eggs:
Half Life rewarded you for wandering a bit by giving you extra items (Health, Ammo)
and revealing more of the storyline. SiN,e1 rewards wandering by giving you extra items,
keeping score of your discoveries, and making some of the rewards themselves worth the
effort of having a little fun with the game in the tradition of classics like
Doom and Commander Keen.

IMO SiN: Emergence is as good in gameplay as the original Half Life.
It is up to as good visually and for acting quality as Half Life 2
(in that RoboCop to Stargate sort of way).
It is (on average) an hour longer to play thru than HL2 Episode 1.

And it shows positive potential for episodic gaming content going forward.

This is just my opinion, but I think I got my moneys worth from it, and
I hope this helps your decision.

cquinn, that was very well written and argued.

Wonderful, cquinn, I started to plan to buy SiN. I will buy it when I have sufficient money. Yet, most likely I won't have.

i still think its all about boobies :)
This is the best part of the game. :naughty:

I just picked it up in a store the other day.....its actually a pretty fun game....lets creativity than HL2....but its still fun.

If I had a choice to fight a never-ending onslaught of enemies in HL2, or an onslaught in Sin: E, I would choose the one in Sin: E (This gamemode actually exits in Sin: E, btw). It's a bit more fun just shooting bad guys than it is in HL2. HL2 is WAY better in every other way though, and that puts it at a higher level.

I liked SiN more.
But if your looking for something new and out of this world, lokk no ferther than Hl2EP1

How could you like Sin more than HL2....give me examples

Sin was a fun game, but overall it doesnt measure up to hl2:ep1. It doesnt look as good and it got boring after a while fighting the same things over and over. I'm definetly going to try out the next sin episode though.

Sin is a great game to play though once where you just run n gun and thats it. but it's no where near as good as HL2 and HL2:e1. The dynamic difficultly system never really worked for me after they fixed it.

I dont want to say SIN was better... over all HL2 is definatly better... but i like the whole over all fighting aspect of SIN way better the HL2. I love that you can literally shoot some ones head off in SIN. I also love that you get acurate weapons... i absoultly hate the smg in HL2... i loved the one in HL1 ( which i guess was actually more of an assult rifle) . I do however like the pistol in HL2 better then the one in SIN... well they both have there qualities. over all i think that if you wanna shoot people up... run around blasting heads off and love listening to people screem and suffer when they burn alive... then SIN is definatly for you. oh and i love the menu screen song.

Sin is good... very good. But compared to HL2 or HL2: Ep1, it's graphically a bit worse: the textures and scenery just isn't as pretty, there's no bloom or HDR, and the level design doeasn't have the same 'wow' effect HL2 and Ep1 has. I'm sure this'll improve for later Sin games, but at the moment Emergence doesn't look that great (apart from the gore - that's just spectacular!)

That said, graphics aren't everything. The gameplay was fun and the guns actually felt more powerful than the respective weapons in HL2 (the SMG being the best of all)... Plus, the variable difficulty makes me want to play it again (though to be fair, I have completed HL2 6 or so times now, but Sin only once).

Finally, the Arena game mode is perfect for a quick blast of killing after a hard day's work...!

I think you can compare Sin and HL2, despite them being two pretty different games. Both are FPS's, use the same engine and offer episodic content. Therefore, in response to the original question:
No, Sin is NOT as good as HL2, but it's still good, and I'd recommend it!

the gameplay is satisfying cause it is made using source.but as far the story line goes, its worse than a b-grade movie(frankly)...

The original SiN game when it came out was a big evolutionary step up the ladder for FPS gaming and was way better than anything else out there in the marketplace at the time. However cruel fate contrived to have SiN launch at the same time as Half Life which meant it missed out on all the plaudits. If Ritual had shoved it out the door a month earlier or Valve had opted to delay Half Lifes release by a bit, SiN would undoubtedly of garnered a lot of game of the month awards from the industry press.

But I don't really feel it is that good. What exactly is the "evolutionary step" ?

the game needs an online mode and more weapons... some creative weapons would be nice too... the 3 standard, every day FPS guns just didnt cut it for me... I like to have a large variety in guns, that of wich arnt all the same, thats why im looking forward to Resistance"fall of man" ( or something like that ) by Insomniac.. the same people who make RatchetandClank, I love the huge variety of different and creative weapons that RatchetandClank provided that Sin lacks. (its kinda hard to compare a 3rd person shooter to a thirdperson shooter.. well to be fair R&C 2-4 had FPS modes but i dont think many people used them.. )

I had no interest in this game until the thing about boobies.

...Just kidding.

I am semi-interested in at least trying it out though, how long is it gameplay wise?
