Is Source misjudging my cpu?

hi all, I noticed when I bring up my console in HL@ after the game initialy loads that it says my cpu is only 559 (or sometimes 666) mghz, when it is in fact a 1.7 Pentium M.

It judges the ram right, at a gig, but the cpu is off. I know Source auto scales to your system, so is it possible that Source is misjudging my systme and scaling itself too low? If so, how can I fix this.

and on a side note, how do you increase the heap size from its measily 64mb?

thanks in advance

How about scaling it up... Just go to graphics, it has the recommended settings (The "Auto) already set, just change them there.

hmmm...are you sure your CPU is running at 1.7 like it's supposed to?

I'd suggest trying a windows program to clock your CPU, then if it's still at 600 mhz in Windows, try going into the Bios and changing the FSB speed.

Also, does it say 1.7 ghz when your computer is booting up?

When laptop (Pentium M 1.5 Ghz) is running on battery power and is in presentation/max battery mode the speed drops to either 600MHz, 300Mhz or even a tad lower...

Check the power settings.

Right click "My Computer". Click Properties. It at least says you have a 1.7 there right?

I've got a xp2400 - runs at 2gig, for the most part cs:s reports it as such, but occaisonally it reports it to be running at 2.4gig.....

As for heapsize add this to your command line or launch options:

-heapsize **** (where **** = upto half your RAM in megs x 1024)

Mobile CPU's have very fluctuating clock speeds in order to minimize battery usage.

My HL2 says that my CPU is 7.0 GHz, so I wouldn't take it too seriously.

Its true that Pentium Ms scale their power, but Ive got it plugged in when I run HL2. Shouldnt it be running at max?

When I open up system under control panel, it displays as should, 1.7mhz. Also, my bios, which comes from dell, doesnt allow for advanced manipulation of things like the fsb, at least not to my knowledge. If Im missing something, someone please inform me of such!

thanks for the info on the heap size. Guess Im a newb in many repsects, cause I dont even know what heap size refers to (memory available for texture info?) but I thought 64mb was pretty small.

Since its from dell, no comp specs are displayed at startup, just a dell splash screen....

Dead-Inside - you mentioned that I should "go" into graphics and adjust the settings there. Is that through the console or some access in hl2?

ps - sorry I dont know jack and preciate the help. I wanna maximize the HL2 experience!

my hl2 is running fine. make sure all your windows and power settings are correct, and plug in your laptop.

Does that for me too, its nothing really to worry about, just sometimes gets it wrong.

As for the heapsize, type something like -heapsize 256000 in the launch options or shortcut after the .exe

as dose mine mine says my cpu is runign at 1.9 when i have an athalon 2600+

yah sometimes it tells me my cpu is 8GHz (oh how I wished it was so) But yah first time I saw that I was like holy sh*t alright! To bad game still played the same. ;)

Looks like your SpeedStep settings are not set for optimal performance.

First thing I would check out is to change the "Power Scheme" to "Always On" and then start HL2 and see what it reports.

Start --> Control Panel --> Power Options --> Power Scheme --> Always On --> OK

"Always On" will keep the processor at full speed and keep it from going into stand by.
"Portable/Laptop" will set the processor to 600 MHz and allow it to “SpeedStep" up to your processor's full speed when needed to balance power and battery.
"Max Battery" will keep the processor running at 600 MHz constantly to conserve the battery.

My Sager 3790 had problems with SpeedStep until I installed WinXP SP2. That could be a possibility with your Dell also.

Check out the Dell section on Notebook Forums for some more helpful info. It's run by PCTorque.com, bought my lappy from them. Great place!

it's supposed to be 1,9 ghz imho
I have 2500 clocked to 2800 and its 2ghz.
AMD just has a different measuring system or smth :D

Yes AMD does't go by pure GHz(MHz) rating anymore. It is a rating and which your processor would perform like against the competitors CPU at the same clock speed. When "source" reads your cpu it is reading the actual clock speed not the rating that AMD gave it. This isn't something new it has been around for a couple of years now. Intel is shifting to the rating system now too.
