is the source code an important part of the game, or just a selling point?

From what i've seen from the screenshots and vids, the source engine plays an imporant part in the gameplay. do you think it will be a vital factor in gameplay and overall quality for the game? or do you believe it will turn out to be a novelty, a selling point? I personally think that the gravity gun and its uses will be pretty sweet although through thirty six hours of gameplay, all the exiting graphics in the world wont disguise bad gameplay.

You've got source code confused with "Source", the engine powering the game.

Source code is the generic term for the text that is compiled to make any program. It's contained in many different files which are a complete anethema to anyone who is not a programmer.

"Source" is what Valve has chosen to call their game engine. You've seen games built off the Quake engine or perhaps the Lithtech engine. Source is Valve's new engine.

Source engine isn't the same as source code.

This thread boggles my brain because he said source code in the title but source engine in the body.

I guess he meant body, let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

Source is the engine. Its an integral part of the game. Like most of the reviews say, it would be IMPOSSIBLE to finish some of the puzzles, and / or enimies off without the engine there.. simple as. I dont think they will be SHOWING it off...a lot like that Techdemo we all know and love (farcry) but i think it will be used subtly, a lot like we would use things in the real world..

But ya know that im gonna be building a half pipe...infact a whole skate park to mess around in on that hover scooter thing, when hammer becomes available!!

OWNED!

Reading all these high reviews, it sure doesnt sound very gimmicky to me. I know the physics and such play a part in CS: S already, and hasn't really gotten gimmicky in there yet.

The source engine was simply built around what they want to do with the game (and extras behind the scenes for mod makers), so nothing is there 'just to show it off' really. It's essential to the game because it IS the game.

Yes. They made HL1 fit the engine they had. yes they moded the Quake engine to what they needed but they were restricted!! Thing is now, its be tailored to what they want...so be prepared to be rocked!

OMG is this guy for real?

I'm not sure if I should even take this thread seriously. He's asking if the game's engine is just a selling point or actually needed? OMG SERIOUSLY!!!! Think about it, can a car drive without an engine? Can a plane fly without an engine? (Exclude gliders). Can you live without a brain?

The answers to these questions is all yes. So, to answer your question, the game NEEDS the engine, and it's not just a "selling point".

Yeah, I meant no. The answer is no. You cannot drive a car without an engine, you cannot fly a plane without and engine, and you can't live without a brain. Which I appear to be doing ATM. I DEFY SCIENCE!!!
