Depends on connection type and ISP.

oh...

if you did have the right types and isp how could you do it?

just curious.

Well, it depends on the connection type and ISP... Its not only a question of IF, but also HOW.

release renew if you have a router

repair connection if your running xp connected directly to your modem

Not available on every router (thats why I wanted to know connection type)
Not available on all cable ISP's (connection type/ISP)
Doesn't work well on many Dial-up ISP's (need the connection type & ISP plz)

XP Connection repair won't always get a new IP.

I know I can't get a new ip. Only one in my range.

VDSL, isp = i don't know...

how do you know the isp?

The isp is the company you're paying to get the internet connection.

VDSL is special, as its only really used commercially (AFAIK). You must be very close to the service exchange if you have VDSL (like.. less than 4500 feet). I would imagine changing the IP on a VDSL network would be a pain because its designed to be very static as its aimed at a business market.

Well if you're looking to get a way around an IP ban, you could always enable a proxy.

thanks people.

For DHCP it's ridiculously easy.

If you want to change the IP of your machine which is a DHCP client, release and renew using IPCONFIG (Windows NT/XP). If you want to change your modem's IP and your modem is a DHCP client, turn it off and on.
