Hi..

Im of to order a new computer so i would like some peoples advice on this buy before i order it..

Asus A7N8X-X (Nforce 2)
AMD Athlon 2600Xp
Radeon 9600PRO 128Mb (or 256mb, dont think its big difference)
256MB DDR-Ram PC3200
80Gb Hitachi 7200RPM

I want to play HL2 on a descent resolution with some cool effects on...

Plz tell me what you think.. would help alot!

Yea and if you can try to get up to a gig of ram.Other than that you have a great computer.

Didn't gabe somewhere say that 525 mb of ram are totally sufficient and the E3 comp only had 1 gig so he could play the whole demo without reading from the hard drive?
I mean, of course 1 gig is better than 512, but it's not really necessary... 512 are quite optimal. If not, you can still upgrade later on, right?

Not if you use the latest dual channel memories.. Then you'll have to get 2 new ones :/.

My reccommendation: Take away the 2600XP, and get the Barton 2500+. It will be a much better choice for the same price. Also, if you can spend a bit more and get the Abit NF7-S or A7N8X Deluxe.

well its obvious hes on a budget, hes not gonna crank out another 100 on a nf7-s

you could get the 2500+ and save like 10 bucks. youd want the 512 ram.
unless you want to overclock get pc2700, which will run insync with the cpu.
maybe get a cheaper HDD?
do you need 80 gigs?

or just grab another 256 later on and you'll be set.
your call man.

actually I say get the 3200 and set your fsb at 200 and your multi at 9 you will get the same speed and the benifit of faster ram in sync with your FSB Everyone wins. BTW get the 2500+ great cpu. also 512 for sure.

Other then upping the ram to 512 my only other suggestion would be to get a 8meg cache drive like the Western Digital Special Edition hard drives.

Can someone explain why you want me to get the 2500XP ? is it because its barton you want me to get it? Cause i want to Ocerklock my PC later on, is 2500XP barton the best choice then? and why?
And whats up with all the fuzz about the Ram speed?

I gotta feeling that the x version of that Asus board is not Nforce2. You might want to check to be sure. The XP 2500+ is worth the extra money, it overclocks brilliantly (the 2400 and 2600 are crap for that). You want 512 of RAM ideally at the same FSB speed of your CPU. Two banks of 256 as well not one module. Then again check that the x version of your board excepts dual channel memory. Also its about another £80 for a 9800 non pro, well worth it to future proof.

MacGraham,

I had the same thought since I am in the market for an Asus Nforce2 mobo and didn't remember that name (Asus A7N8X-X) as being one.

Upon further review (looked at Newegg) it actually is an Nforce2, so he has no worries.

I forgot that the "N" in the name means Nforce (would be a "V" for the Via chip)
