some guy on css claiming to be a comp programmer told me that a gig of ram wont reduce lag (i have 760). he said that hl2 only needs like 512 and nething higher is unneeded and hl2 wont even use the xtra....sounded like bs. (both he and I have a 5200 pci, I would certainly think hl2 would welcome some ram to compensate)

SO.........?

btw...post # gone?

Yeah, post numbers are gone, apparently.

There is NO such thing as having too much memory. Lag, on the other hand, is related to your internet connection, not neccesarily your hardware. I think you're confusing fps with ping. So yeah, getting more memory because you think it'll reduce lag is like saying "I'm gonna get another gig of memory so my net connection will jump from a 56k to a broadband".

By the way, 760 sounds like some nasty ping... How often is it? Or is that your memory?

I think he means 760MB of ram.

well, there really is, and for HL2 1024 meg is probably more then the game will ever use. However, it might want mroe then 512 RAM, so id say 768 would be almost identical to 1024, but better then 512. Having said that though, its not like having the extra RAM is a bad thing, even if its nto being used its not gonna hurt anything.

more more more /me chants more.

as said before ram will help load times. it will also help paging issues and as MadHatter says u can never have too much memory :)

load times are a little faster (just upgraded from 512-1024) but exiting and alt tabing are pretty much instantanious, which is sweet especially if your parents don't like you gaming much (sad at age of 20 i know).

also irons out alot of mini freezes in game

The advantages of having more RAM, is that you can allocate HL2 512MB and still have plenty for any other apps your running in the background.

760 ram...and I have cable.....so it aint ping thats sucks (cough couch 5200 pci cough) but yeah....I'll get a gig l8er, much. prolly after I buy some other good games.

What kind of lag are you experiencing though? Is it consistent? Is it sporadical? Large spikes? Peppered spikes? Is it frame rates or ping? (You can have cable and your ping will skyrocket from time-to-time. I would know because I have Verizon DSL.)

I'd get another gig of RAM, too. Albiet 620 should be enough, I like powerful systems ;). Memory's effectiveness isn't limited to just 512 for HL2 and nor is it only useful for running other applications at the same time while playing HL2. Memory is among the largest role-players in computers when it comes to games (BUS speed and graphics cards being a couple others, for example). Memory (RAM) can help relieve stress and make things easier for your graphics card as well. Also, the larger your monitor's screen is, the more the memory is better. Larger screen = larger pages and frames (frame rates ring a bell?). You won't regret having a 1 gig or more of RAM if you plan on playing HL2 on a very high resolution with high details on a large screen.

I'm not saying 1 gig or more is the only way to go. The preferred amount for HL2 is 512, anything lower might give ya some woes. But, that doesn't mean more couldn't hurt and it certainly doesn't mean the memory will be wasted or unemployed.

it wont give you more fps per say.........but it will not be as skippy/choppy, if at all. More memory to hold data in is always better than having to swap to your hdd. I have a 9800pro and a amd64 3200 @ 2.6 and when i went from 512 to 1024 it was like night and day, especially in games. I will never use less than 1024 again. next system will have 2 gigs in it:)

Yeah, that's what I was trying to flesh out in a simple definition. It'll help tackle the chugginess.
