I've been looking at my options for a birthday present and I've had my eye on an Xbox and Xbox Live for some time now. I just want to know is it worth the money? Are there alot of servers for games? Is it reliable and does it have any bugs? And most importantly, is it fun? I'm not looking to cancel out my PC online play or anything, I just wanted to know if there are things I can do on Xbox Live that I cant on my PC. Oh, and how's my selection of games?

if you have more then 3 Xbox games, get xbox live... especially when Halo 2, Mechassault 2, and DOA:U come out... you'll want it ( notice they are all sequels  )

Right now I don't even have an Xbox. I'm looking to buy one and Xbox Live. Should I do this? My PC is good and I don't think I need to upgrade, not even for HL2, so I'm looking into an Xbox for some side-gaming action...errr...yeah.

i like xbox live. i cancelled my subscription when i got a good computer though. ghost recon and games like it are very fun. especially raven shield.

i only have 2 XBL enabled games and i'm jonesing for XBL really badly! i just don't have the cash right now :(

but the Xbox is a great system! i suggest getting it

Xbox live:
Loads of games
Fast and reliable
Voice and video(soon)
No need for loads of extra routers ect. just a cable from your modem
Lots of players

But for christs sake DONT get PS2 network gaming. It should be called wontwork gaming. Its really awful.

How much is X-Box life anyways (If PC game multiplayer doesn't cost anything once you buy a game, why do the consols charge a fee?).

40 bucks to buy the communicator, and i think you get a free year. its 5 bucks a month after that.

it costs money because microsoft maintains servers, as do individual companies. this maintains friends, voIP, etc.

But what's their reason for charging you. I mean look at the amount of time Valve spend developing and maintaining steam and they only charge you for the game and mp is free as long as you have the CD-Key, so how does Mircrosoft justify the $5 (I would pay it quite readily if I ever get an X-Box, but I'm curious :) ).

the games themselves are hosted on microsoft servers. not on your individual xbox, because it lacks the power to play and serve at the same time.

Well Steam runs on Valve's servers and it's free.....

steam has nothing to do with servers

What are those photos of the "Steam Servers" that people are always bringing back from Valve then? I always thought they're content delivery servers.

Steam is simply the switch board which organizes the servers running on independant computers around the world (at least that's how I would construct it ;) ).

:dozey: My oldest brother says it's worth it. He says all that anti-cheat, downloads is way better than what Sony has to offer with PS2... but that's from a guy who doesn't play PC games...

Xbox live is definitly worth it. It's the ultimate way to play sports games, for one. voice chat, stable servers, everyone has broadband...
and with Halo 2 and whatnot coming out.....

How do they justify the cost? They have servers that host the games, servers that store account information, sore leaderboards, etc.

Ive played both of those games and imo they suck. Really badly compared to computer games. Computer games are just so much better tahn console games, they only plus to having a console (i have GC and PS2) is multiplayer and coop.

thats your opinion.

XBox Live is excellent :) and definately worth the cash.

Soon Halo 2, PES 4 and Outrun 2 (!) will all be playable on Live. Each of these games are worth the price of an XBox alone. Playing them online with your mates is going to be simply amazing.

i think i might try xbox live to when Halo2 comes out, just for fun, i know pc gaming is better online :)

but do many ppl play with xbox online?
and ive seen a movie of halo2 multiplayer but it looked like they had autoaim :/ ? plz tell me it doesnt use autoaim online that would suck lol

lol theres no autoaim.
anyways, it depends on the game (as to how many people are playing)
some games have like hundreds of servers, some have 5-10 :P
Halo2 will have hundreds of servers up at a time

I want to ask something:

in the box of cronicles of riddick:escape of butcher bay it hav the "Xbox live" thing but the game dont hav mutliplayer
so for what is the Xbox live thing?

XBL is great, I had a lot better time playing MM3 with my freinds than any PC game.

I disagree. Both have their place. The pc, while great for a limited number of genres, offers very little variety in online gaming. It is, however, the king when it comes to first person shooters and competitive play. For fun, disposable gaming, with a wide selection of titles, XBox Live is clearly superior.

Many people do use XBox Live and Halo does use autoaim (of a sort). It's implemented in a very subtle way, though - and improves the experience greatly. When your crosshair is over your target it slows down slightly, making it easier to keep them under fire, and tracks them to a small degree. It's hardly noticable and allows for multiplayer action that, imo, can compete with most shooters that use a mouse and keyboard. In no way does this detract from the skill - it does, however, make up for one of the minor draw backs of using a joypad (that twitch, fast aiming is harder than it is with a mouse) This is a small price to play for rumble, trigger buttons and analogue control - which make using a mouse and keyboard a very sobre experience in comparison.

PCs for rts/mmorpg/fps and online tournies and competitions, XBox Live for fun gaming with your mates.

(Streetfighter online? Yes please :) )

I hope you guys are right because I went and got one (an Xbox). I ,of course, got Halo and I'm throughly enjoying the single player at the moment.

:D

I remember the day my XBox and Halo arrived (i'm still playing it co-op with mates) It's on par with when my SNES with Super Mario World arrived.

Wait till you move onto Legendary - as this is where Halo really shines :D (plenty of xen-like 'in the zone' moments) No other single player shooter requires as much skill and practise - or offers the satisfaction they bring (imo, or course ;))

Don't remind me of legendary Warbie, I remember hiding behind a rock with both my pistol and assault rifle empty with my health low and shield down, surronded by elites, their plasma whizzing past me...nightmare I tell you...nightmare..;(

lol :) i hear that.

2nd level by chance? On Legendary that has to be one of the toughest.

Don't know.... I've wondered that myself. It only has single player, I have no idea why it says "Xbox live enabled" on the front.

it probably has new content delivered via xbl. levels, patches, etc. KOTOR has that as well, you get new levels and items.
