Is your Laptop or Bike lock safe?

My bike lock wont stop anyone who wants to try(although openining it with a pen would be difficult, as it uses a more traditional style key), but it would be more effort than most, and my bike isnt as expensive as the ones I park it next to ;)

As for locking up your computer, well I'm probably gonna get a laptop and leave my big comp at home when I move into halls at uni.

well, you can sort of avert attention away from your machine. one of my mates ran his pc out of a shoebox. quite literally, he shoved all the components into a shoebox, put it into a drawer in his desk, drilled holes in the back to allow the wires in and some ventilation. all that's visible of his machine is the monitor and various peripherals. the drawer has a lock and key to it.

or you could just get a laptop.

I watched a documentary on bike thieves, they showed this kid (he was 16) break into a kryptonite lock (supposedly industructible) in less than a minute ...he used butane lighter refill bottle that freezes the lock and then he just smacked it with a hammer and it broke

I was thinking of getting a security chain for my new comp since I am now living in residence but I think I will hold off until the newer style lock becomes the standard in stores.

I don't think a pen would fit my bicycle lock. It should be virtually indestructible at any rate (unless someone really, really wants my bike and brings out some insane tools).

When parking your bike simply put it next to either a more expensive one, or one that's less secure. That way they'll go for that one, and not yours. :)

I can't put it in a shoebox, I just love my case too much:

plus everyone knows my computer now because its the most powerful on the floor (although its certainly not top of the line). A laptop is even worse however because the chances of it being stolen here are significantly higher than a desktop (that is supposedly statistically true where I am).
