I recently had the pleasure of being in an Islamic History class (It's an elective - I?m going for a History minor), when a debate broke out. While I'm not a Muslim, half the class is. The professor made a remark about slavery in the Islamic world and the Muslim students went nuts. It seemed to me that the Muslim students were trying to deny or even re-imagine history. I was smiling as they were going at it with the professor and one of them took offense and called me out on it. To me, it?s fascinating how something can cause a group of people to become religious ?fanboys?, so to speak. What was so terrible with saying ?yes, my predecessors enslaved people?? It just irks me how they didn?t even accept that slavery happened under Islamic rule.

I was just curious to see opinions on this matter here.

Sounds about right.

Esp. if they were going all aggro about it. Wtf, your ancestors kept slaves, you're not like them, kthnxbai.

Meh?

I thought so :dozey:

I don't like making stereotypes (as hard as that may be to believe), but you've got nothing there but another pile of brainwashed ****s.
It's one thing if they present evidence but seriously, they need to shut their ****ing mouths if they've got nothing better to do.

There's no point in denying history. It's just that, history.

I've heard it said before that political correctness is often the source of historic inaccuracy, and I believe that to be true in most cases.

Good for your professor for preserving history at the risk of retribution.

Slavery is not just limited to a few races. Every race has been a victim of it in the past as well as the victimizer. Again, it's simply human nature at it's worst.

I look not at skin color, but humans in general. Hmph, feeble minded creatures. :hmph:

Indeed, if you go back far enough more or less everyone.

I love it when people start to argue with their teachers.

The Irish, but if we we're all drunk all the time you can be damn well sure all you Charlies would be under the rule of King Paddy O'Toole by now.

I'm pretty sure St. Patrick was as a slave. ;)

not really that odd .just bring up the vatican aiding nazi war criminals to a catholic or that former israeli prime minister Menachem Begin was involved in terrorist activities that killed hundreds of innocent civilians ..or the war in iraq to a republican

people dont want to accept that their country/religion/group are involved in atrocities, it's too difficult to justify these sort of things away. they'd much rather deny they ever existed

You think we wasted alcohol on slaves? Hah!

I feel I must apologise for the conduct of the British Empire through out history.

To all nations, come to Britain and rape us. Enslave us. We deserve it.

The weird thing is that we're comparatively well-liked by many of our former colonies, despite the harsh treatment. I guess it's what happens when nobody takes you seriously any more.

I certainly didn't have the Irish in mind when I typed that, hah.

(Edit: keep thinking you're from the south.)

We are outsourcing quite a lot of jobs to them. :shh:

It is ironic, like rain on your blah blah.

That is human nature. You being gamer should easily be able to see it in NVIDIA vs ATI fanboys, Intel vs AMD, Halo vs Half Life, what one groups accusses another they excuse for themselves.

You see it in politics, in music, bascially anywhere there are humans.

You class in New York city is half muslim? I find that very hard to believe for some reason.
