Isn't It Ironic ?

Its a simple irony, but I remember playing Half-Life when it first came out and maybe I'm alone in this but... one real staying feeling was that I had very little idea what was going to happen next in the game; not much of an idea what the approaching enemies looked like, or what weapons I would aquire. It was a pure adventure, (no screenshots to look back on).

So part of the excitement was not knowing what was round the corner or how long it would last.... And yet here we all are grasping at every little titbit of information over it's sequel, pre-moulding our views and perhaps misplacing our expectations. Maybe we should all sit back and wait for it to hit us, or am I just misjudging human nature.....personally I struggle to stay away from these forums in the hope of new information.

We now live in an age, only a few years later when information is spread (sometimes dishonestly) faster and easier through the internet forums etc.

Maybe Valve should have kept it quiet till it was much more complete. How many of us really honestly 100% expected HL2 to appear before Valve announced it?

The question is, will we enjoy it any more for knowing all that we know now........

Mmmm

The important thing is that we will enjoy it.

I'm actually inclined to agree- I was just hit by a spoiler less than five minutes ago, and when I consider the others I've inadvertently stumbled across it makes me wish HL2 was in complete media blackout.

Fortunately there's plenty of content and set pieces and story that I'm yet to encounter; but I am indeed going to stay clear of reviews/previews that reveal too much content for the casual browsers' tastes.

It's free hype , and it works wonders for selling things.

Maybe so, but when you've finished the game. Can you tell me honestly that it was as good as it would have been as a fresh story? No spoilers!

Mmmm

The spoilers that have come out so far (besides the leak) aren't going to amount to much more than just something to grab your attention, like cleavage.

Bah stop stating that, you played it, I did not. For every review thats made of HL2 more screenshots are being released and this game you speak of is entering my brain in the wrong way. When I now come across Alyx's robot I will go "Oh that is dog" rather than going "Oh wtf! is that help, oh its just dog"

See the difference?

I really hope you promise what you say in that barely skin deep have we seen HL2, I will hold you to this statement.

;)

If it was in complete media blackout you'd all be complaining and foaming at the mouth and stuff :p

Yeah guys, at least we've something to talk about to shorten the wait.

That's not tru- Quick, grab 'im!

"We know you have inside info. Confess. CONFESS!"

You have a fair point, even for a scum fan :p

I knew nothing about half-life until the reading a gushing review by an extremely shocked PC Gamer reviewer - can't remember who sorry...
I was hooked from the train ride onwards.

This time I think I'm much better informed about the sorts of things I'll be encountering, although I do believe that Valve have been wise to keep the story from us.
There will be many surprises left, I'm sure...

Cheers,
Krusty

I don't think what we know will infringe on our enjoyment because I'm positive there's much more to the game that what we know already. Valve have been careful about that from the word go - I mean, we didn't know about it for 5 years -and I think reviews have respected this and done the same.

You would find something else to talk about, believe me. Surely !

I accept that Valve have been very careful with the information they have dished out, and as i said, I am as guilty as anyone for being so goddam obsessed with it now I know its coming.

BUT, you only have to spend a short time looking through the HL2 forums to see spoilers that you don't expect. Even if you avoid the obvious ones. I have stumbled on 2 (I would describe as major) spoilers and that really annoyed me.

Point is, if they went public at the point it went gold, you would know much less when you first play it and your experience would probably be purer.

But.....its not the end of the world.

Valve realizes the importance of keeping the story and surprises to a minimum as that is a major factor in a good gaming experience. But at the same time, they are aware of the benefit of letting pieces of information out to the public to generate excitement.

It's a fine line to walk and it seems to me Valve is doing a good job. Especially when I read bits like "the E3 binks videos served as a distraction from what is really in the game" in reviews.

Of course the litmus test will be when I actually get to play the game.

Great point! All the hype is definetly needed, for the whole marketing side of any business. Where did you read about the binks being different from the game?

TBH its a bit too late to be raising this sort of question now, and anyway it's just human nature that we're all inquisitive about the game that changed so many people's views on the whole FPS/Pc gaming world.

I know that when i played the original Half Life, i didnt have a goddam clue what it was about (sum guy lent it me in college with the whisper "here, try this, you'll be hooked"), and so i definitely felt like i was experiencing a whole new lesson in game creation.

Anyway, back to my original point about being too late. Well it is, we've now been brainwashed by a load of informageeks, and in case anyone hadnt noticed, this happens in most governments everyday, and as a result of this the world will soon turn into a big pile of shit.

Gutted, and for anyone (like myself) who doesn't really understand why i just said all that, nvmd, i'm very bored at work...

PCGAMEPLAY NL

"HL2 is THE next gen FPShooter. Believe the hype! The BINK videos have functioned as a distracting mechanism, since the actual game seems to, on occasions, differ from the content showed in the BINKS."
