Isn't Valve lucky to have fans like us?

Pedantic, Belittle, Arrogant, Pretentious. Wow I'd say I just took a pretty hard beating. Welcome to the forums Smokey :)

Actually I somewhat disagree and think it is the other way around. I think "us" gamers are lucky there is a company like VALVe, heh. A company that hires directly from the community based on skills fun factor and success. A company that directly supports and modifies it's game engine for it's mod community. A company that for 5 years patched that engine for "us". At the same time hardly generating much new income from "us". A company that's founder daily answers emails directly from "us". A company that would rather spend all it's money to create a TRUE triple A title, than spit out carbon copy bi-yearly titles.

Sure as lucky as VALVe is to have us, we are alot more lucky to have them, than them to have us. They could be quite profitable, if not more profitable releasing generic crap titles. That cost crap to make than spending 50 million on a title for us. Than they will most likely spend much much more on for years to come patching for us and the mod community. Hell most of us have got 5 years, almost 6 now, of fun great gaming for a one time fee of 49.99.

Tell me what other game has done that?

You know what, I agree with you in that we are lucky to have valve. But without the fans none of this is possible. If you send Gabe an e-mail right now and asked him what do you think he'd say?

As for the making money part. That is the best selling game of all time. Kind of shot urself in the foot there friend. You said it yourself what other company has done that. What other game is still in boxed version at the store after this many years? Well there could be others but not ones that have 14k servers give or take up at any given time.

FLAMEWAR!!!!!!! *charge my computer desktop*

PS: I will buy HL2, Valve will get my money, the end of discussion. Buy it or don't, Valve could care less about you. And if the only reason you are not buying the game are the delay, well, start getting your priorities in order.

Their gonna get my money too, the second its released. Who's not buying the game Lazicsavo?

Fans that bitch and moan at every little thing that goes wrong? Fans that continually insist on making fun of Gabe's burrito addiction? Fans that are so ravenous that they send you hundreds of emails a day asking "wen is hl2 comin' out?!!?!?!1111."

I'd say they're lucky. If by "lucky" you mean "cursed."

My brother, we are sworn Doom3/HL2 rival. Of course he's gloating right now (wouldn't if he knew I have Doom 3 on my computer with his CD-key), but the major reason he isn't buying is because Valve didn't deliver on their release date and Doom 3 came out earlier.

Plus there are a lot of people here that complain about the delay. Sigh. Valve does not own us anything. They are making a product, they have families and then need to support them, that is the only thing driving them to do a good game, they do not want to go out of business, that is their major reason. Fans are important, but secondary. Larger companies like EA do not even have fans, they only have potential buyers.

I think you just don't understand. Not one bit. Your missing the whole point of what profit margin vs development costs vs marketing cost means. As for bests elling game of all time? I'm not sure about that. It's up there in the top though. But the thing you don't understand is they could have made and released 15 crappy titles like most developers, and sold 1 million units each just because of their name, and made quite alot more money. But I just think you do not understand. That is the main reason that the FPS and game market is lacking in innovation right now.

Yes we are, great fans:

1. Hack their systems
2. Steal their source code
3. Compile and distribute an illegal build of their last 5 years work
4. Make fun of Gabe
5. Complain about every little thing wrong in BETA software
6. Over anaylise and bitch about bugs, for a game that isn't complete
7. Harass them with the same email questions day in and day out.
8. Critic every little pixel in ever screen/video and bitch, knowing its still W.I.P.
9. Bitch when they try to make a bigger profit for themselves (steam)
10. Bitch because it takes a little longer to get hi res videos, of footage we've already seen.

Hmmm, I think valve are more loyal than we are... :)

So maybe its time to give something back to the people that made them. Maybe their gonna throw a fastball instead of curve this time and release it a bit earlier that everyone is speculating. It would not only be fitting, it would be very fair to the people that made valve who they are today. US. We. The Fans. The Players. A tolerent swell group of mofo's if you ask me.

Guess what, they already gave you something back for your money, a little thing called 'Half-Life' and 6 years of support. So I think they paid off their debt of $50.
We have NOTHING to do with the development of HL2, that's Valve's business. It becomes our business when it comes out then Valve is supposed to give support for the money you gave them, but until then, it's all up to Valve and this may sound cliche: they owe you jack shit.

So forgiving we all are, Valves lucky to have fans like us. I mean that with a deep passion. We should give ourselves a pat on the back for all the rigamaroll we have been through with this game. I mean the numerous broken release dates over the past year.

They've only missed one date to my knowledge.

After all WE are the ones who make Valve who they are.

I'm pretty sure that Valve's employees make Valve what it is. But that's just me!

WE are the ones who pays every Valve employees salary's.

It would seem that Pat Goodwin is responsible for financing and accounting at Valve.

So for all that are confused. Valve doesent pwn you. You all pwn them. Bigtime. They know it and you should know it too.

I thought Gabe owned Valve Software.

It would not only be fitting, it would be very fair to the people that made valve who they are today. US. We. The Fans. The Players. A tolerent swell group of mofo's if you ask me.

We truly are a game company's dream come true. Not only did we hack into Valve's network and steal Half-Life 2, but we also hijacked Gabe's account at HL2 Fallout and caused disturbance.

I agree with the original poster, to an extent. However I would word it as valve has a responsibility to the fan base. It’s just natural. If you guys made something that you loved and was enjoyed by millions you would feel as if the community has given you something even better than money (of course having money also can’t hurt). Valve enjoys the community and the attention, so they are trying their best to release a second game that would live up to hype. I understand why people get angry at valve for those release dates. I dunt think it has as much to do with it being delayed, as to the fact that Valve just didn’t properly inform us when they could. They didn’t give much info on the delays and they didn’t even report to the major game news site(by going through forum posts they are not releasing as information as they would if they had to release news on Gamespot or Gamespy, IMO). Conclusion, valve needs to feel more responsible to the fans and inform them on the situation better.

Actually Gabe does, from his own bank account. He's a multi-millionaire.

It's not hard to wip up a frenzy amoung adolecent boys. Don't you think someone who is more than twice your age knows how to control your emotions? Exspecially when it's their job?

They arn't lucky to have "us". They put in the effort to make you loyal. Which isn't really hard to do.

Just to clarify again, yes we are lucky to have Valve too guys. I can't wait till its released so I can buy the game.

For everyone that is saying they aren't lucky to have us, your not putting me down. Your putting yourself down.

Last thoughts on this. Free enterprise. Isn't it splendid. Thanks again all for your replies, there are some very good points in the above.
