Issues with 9800 Pro and less then 2.8 Ghz true?

Hi guys I know somebody at ATI that is gonna get me a deal on a new video card and I was wondering if its true that I would need a 2.8 Ghz or higher PC to properly run the 9800 Pro?

I currently have a Sony RZ 31-G specs are:

2.6Ghz
512mb pc 2700 ( will get another 512 before hl2)
some POS Nividia GF4 MX card.

Should I got for a 9600 XT 128 mb or a 9800 Pro 256mb

both cards will be plain ATI.

Nope, absolutely unfounded bullshit. I run a 9800 pro with an Athlon XP 2500+ and it runs perfect.

I hate it when people talk of bottlenecks as the defining factor. A bottleneck will drop you a few frames from it's total potential, but a bottlenecked X800XT is by far faster than a bottlenecked 9800pro on the same system.

9800 Pro is a great card, go for it :)

yeah, you guys are making a huge deal out of this bottlenecking thing.... games now are extreamly gpu dependent, and bottlenecking isn't that large of a factor.

A bottlenecked 9800pro still runs muych faster than a non-bottlenecked 9600XT

I believe I am going to go with a 9800 Pro then. I could get a x800 for cheap as well but I think that would be a bad move, better to save up until I can upgrade everything.

2,6 ghz intel
9800 pro 128

No real problems, but it doenst run HL too good..... dont know why. the other games are fine, so are my aqua -and 3dmark scores.

What exactly is not good? Like how many FPS did you get with and without AA?? Also how much ram is in your system?

Hey I run a 9800pro 128 on a1.8Ghz computer & I don't have much problems. Sure the boost between my last card & this one is not very jaw-dropping (to me) but it works anyway :p

I run a Hercules 9800 flashed to XT on a 2.2 and look at my benchmark scores, no problem here ;)

Well, it's not running like a 5 year old game should run. There are fps drops (from 100 to 60). An 'average' player wouldnt notice the drops but I've played a lot of cs and I really 'feel' the drops. Not too much of a problem tho..

yes, i am also having difficulties with the power supply

Hello, I am brand new to this computer graphics stuff, and I seem to be facing problem after problem. I have a P4 3.0 ghz computer, HP Media Center PC, 1 gb ddr ram, 250 gb hd, PCI-E port, and a built in Intel graphics card.
I was hoping to get a new graphics card to play HL2, Doom3, F.E.A.R. and etc. I was planning on getting the GeForce 6800 for 199$ on NewEgg, but then I found out that it requires a minimum 300 Watt power supply. My HP comes with only 250 Watts. I've spent hours and hours on doing research. My budget is 200$. I was wondering what the best card would be.
PCI-Express, 250 power supply, under 200$.
I am thinking-
ATI X700 Pro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121523

ATI X800 Pro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102589
(which says 300+ recommended Watts)

Or a GeForce 660GT, or would the Geforce 6800 still work WELL although it requires 300 Watts?

I'm so stressed with all these differences

Thanks A Lot Guys,

u will need a whole new atx case thats supports matx motherboard because most prebuilt pcs with that low of psu are matx cases which u can only get a psu up to like 350w once u get the case u should be good to go

The current HP PCs that I've seen sold at Compusa use a standard ATX powersupply. So as long as it says ATX it should mount correctly. I'd grab a brand name 300Watt or more (Antec, Enermax, Fortron, Thermaltake...) An off brand PSU often does not hold up to it's '300watt' rating or at least doesn't give enough power where it's needed.

If it doesn't use a standard ATX powersupply then you will need to see about getting a powersupply from HP directly that fits in their machines. Look at how your powersupply mounts with screws and size then compare it with a Standard ATX powersupply in a store.

You might need to get a 6600GT instead of a 6800 to allow for a powersupply in the budget. Just make sure it's PCI-Express since that's the slot you have.

It seems you have one of them Micro ATX motherboards, and a case to fit that. And the best PSU you can get for it is about 350 Watts.

What giant is sayin is to get a proper full ATX case, and a new PSU, about 400Watts or so.

My 9800 Pro demands about 350 Watts or sommin.

how about X700 Pro? which is better? x700 pro or 6600gt?

The thing is I only have 200$, no more :(, so with that new case, I think there will be no more $ room for a good video card.

que? is wrong it's Como? What as in "huh?" and things is Como not Que. Como can also mean how.

To your actual question,
Any decent graphics card will be at least 300 or 350+. I use an Antec 550watt, paid over a $100. It's got all the nifty stuff with Pci-Express cords etc, overall a very nice power supply.
I would first look into a 350 power supply made by Antec or another high end company. Why? Because then you can be sure a 350watt one will work!, some cheaper brands you may need to go with a 400 - 450 watt one.

-So get a decent power supply from a fairly good brand
-Get a nice graphics card

Now I would make sure your case will work with the power supply(will fit). Some cases are specially designed around there hardware and wont work with other hardware.

Que as in "What?", Uh, 200$, what graphics card would work best if I can't go over 200$! It seems getting a power supply is far more expensive. What video card is good in this case?

Since we're on the topic, should a 3.0ghz P4 not bottleneck with a AGP 6800GT?

just as a fairl warning, alot of people i know (myself included) have had heat related issues with their 9800's, but other than that the card was pretty good

I've had mine for over 2 years now with no problems.
Besides, the 9800 doent have a heat sensor, so how do you know it's heat problems?

I've heard this also, I think its on certain models where the fan isn't quite beefy enough to cope with teh heat produced. I fitted the arctic cooler vga silencer and never looked back. They are so cheap now and pretty easy to fit, you can't go wrong!

Some idiot person in PC World said it would fit on a 9550 . . . he was wrong. . . I fried it.

I'm happy with my 9800 Pro as it is, the heatsink on it looks pretty decent for a stock cooler. I'll probably attach the arctic cooler to the 9800 when I get the courage to try it agin :)

I only use PC World for ink cartridgdes and stuff like that. Other than that, I don't go in there for pc stuff. The workers are the worst ever apart from the odd decent ones (or atleast thats what its like in aberdeen), they don't have a clue about stuff and also they try and get you to buy the most expensive stuff they can.

Well, obviously from my location, Aberdeen is where I stay.

I picked it up for a tenner, which is the same as websites were sellin for + delivery, so I figured why not.

PC World in Aberdeen (or anywhere) = Evil!

I find that NEP (North East Peripherals) is the best local place for pc stuff. Thats where I bought the parts for my own pc when I first built it (Athlon xp2600+, 512mb ddr333, geforce ti4200 etc.). They are pretty good, just at the top of George street, not the John Lewis end though.

I tend to get all my stuff from overclockers.co.uk though, and don't buy that much in NEP/PC World

I know a guy that works in NEP in my college class :p well, used to. He's now doing their website.

when u get geometry corruption (wich is almost always heat related) and you feel the side of you case where your gpu is located and its hot enough it fry eggs; im pretty sure its safe to say the problems are heat related

rofl
Yah, that would make it obvious, eh?
Weird though, I've never had that happen. Sure your fan was still going?
