And I still don't feel tired, infact I feel great! (possibly a manic episode?)
I'm not sure what to make of it. I feel fine, I've not been staying awake on purpose I've just been busy! Normally after being awake for more than 24 hours I just crash and have a mega sleep.
I think it might have something to do with this Sodium Valproate I was prescribed (for bipolar) a fortnight ago, I've been on the full dose of 1000mg a day for a week now.
If this goes on for another day or so it might be wise to check in with the doctor....

Interesting. Normally when I stay up for more than 3 days, I get immense chest pains and headaches compelling me to sleep.

Still, I actually feel fine in the period that's between 20 hours ~ 40 hours. I dunno why, though. Anyway, you should check with the doctor. I'm pretty sure that no sleep is bad for you somehow (although if we didn't need sleep, we would be more efficient with our time, wouldn't we? Like the machines.)

I have been catching up with loads of uni work recently, and been more organised and tidier than normal. And I know after a certain amount of time the brain NEEDS to sleep and will hence make me feel tired. I'm curious as to when this becomes a problem.

Next time, don't make a thread. That will only make things worse. You should be trying to go to sleep (tired or not); sleep deprivation is very unhealthy. Use clean sheets, keep your room cool and dark... I'm sure you know plenty of ways to relax.

I have bipolar also, and have always had more trouble than most adhering to a sleeping schedule (usually, I can't). But I find that if I don't go to sleep within a few hours of the normal time, I will get insomnia. Once I get it, I might not be able to sleep for days. It's really horrible, walking around like a zombie. Conversations with people are dreadful at this point.

I created the thread for people like you to post just that!

I'm cleaning my room like an OCD motherbitch on crack right now. Feels good.

I understand, but listen: I know whenever I make a thread I tend to want to be awake and keep tabs on the comments. So, that's why I'm saying you shouldn't do it.

Go to bed, that ain't right boy.

Listen to wise baldy Eejit and superVirus the Emancipator.

You know if you don't sleep for too long (it's like three months or something) you will die? Just so you know :cat:

Uh, I'm sure it's something much shorter than that. You would die without sleep faster than without food.

I remember seeing a documentary about sleep deprivation, and they showed a particualr experiment that was done with a radio show host. They kept him awake for something like a week or two, I don't remember exactly. At the end of the experiment, he was practically a different person, violent mood swings, short temper, etc.
Before = Jekyll
After = Hyde

Another case I remeber, was with a violin instructor. This man had a though work schedule, and slept very small amounts every day over a period of months. The effects of sleep deprivation acumulated, and he ended up exibiting symptoms similar to stroke victims.

Ok I'm not staying awake for e-pen0r growth or lulz or whatever.

To replace the original post....

tl;dr - I've not been able to sleep, nor have I felt the need to. What gives with this shit?

Yes go to sleep and also call your doctor. If you really think it's the drug, definitely try to get off it.

I had problems with an antibiotic once. Called the nurse line and they said to just keep using it. Told my friend (who now happens to be in med school) and all he did was tell me I was a hypochondriac. It was a "well my whole knee is swollen and itchy and every step I take makes it feel like needles are stabbing me" situation, so I basically insisted on going back to the doctor and they were like, "Wow that's a drug allergy."

Wow what a tank, I usually can't go more than 24 hours without getting bad headaches and a sick feeling in my stomach, as well as fatigue and dizziness. Keep going though, you might break a record.

This is why I felt the need to make a thread, I normally experience exactly what you described. This time it's different which is making me concerned.

Yeah the problem is, this is one of the drugs that you aren't supposed to just stop taking instantly. The dosage needs to be reduced slowly over time etc.
I'll call the doctor later on actually :/

longest I ever stayed away was for 2½ days straight and I was working like 16 hrs both days, it was excruciating too because I was moving a lot of brick and mulch and shit like that. i slept for about 20 hrs straight when i crashed

That must have been ****ing awful. I used to find it bad enough doing half as many hours of similar stuff on short sleep.

why people who post that they have a problem like that always mention that they took some medicine or drug but dont see the medication or drug to be the cause?

anyway hit your head against a wall until you stop moving that will get you a shut eye

Who is this people exactly?

According to a poster I just walked past on the wall at uni it is thought that sleep is involved in solidifying longterm memory, this may also cause dreams. The record for staying away is like 12 days after which the guy died.... See if you can beat him ;)

I haven't slept for 2 weeks....because that would be too long.

Points on offer for who recognises that. Insomnia isn't a good thing neptune, sleep has several therapeutic purposes and although it may be novelty right now, you'll be doing yourself damage. Report the insomnia as an adverse effect to your doctor and...if you feel like it, perhaps take your health more seriously?

Have you tried a couple of glasses of whisky? That usually makes me sleepy.

How about a glass of warm milk to make you sleepy?

Razziar where are you, you're needed!

OP, turn your lights off, lay down on some nice, cold sheets, pull the covers over you, warm yourself up, and you just try not to dose off. It's not healthy to miss out on sleep. It's one of the only times of the day where you really get some time to yourself. Cherish it, I say!

I've really started feeling the effects of sleep deprivation now....
I'm going to try and sleep. Or failing that, at least just mentally relax for a few hours. I managed to get a couple of sleeping tablets so all should be well.
Whiskey and weed normally help me sleep yeah, but I'm having mega financial issues (over a month into semester 1 of university and still no student loan!!!) This coupled with the fact that I had lots of work to catch up on and loads of other shit going down at the same time probably added to the insomnia.
I've had a very productive week so far up until the past 6 hours or so, and found the whole experience bizarrely interesting.
Right now I feel like I'm dreaming, yet at the same time I still feel very alert of my surroundings. (A little bit ketaminey)
My concentration has decreased dramatically in the past 24 hours and my ability to play the guitar has suffered gradually too. The whole week in retrospect feels like a very long day, which I attribute to a very altered sense of the passage of time.
Tuesday 10am to friday 3:30 am seems hardcore enough for me... Good night halflife2.net!

Edit: Just checked the bank, the loan came through! This is going to be a good sleep. I'll just have a cig and be off...

Edit 2: I am going to drink SO MUCH tomorrow.

Goodnight. We'll still be here when you wake up. You won't miss anything.

Perhaps.

/makes suspicious hand gestures

GOD DAMMIT. The thrill of finding out I have money after living in relative poverty for 6 weeks makes me feel awake again.
Also those suspicious hand gestures...
Also if I go to sleep right now then I'll most likely wake up at night time tomorrow... I mean later.... I mean whatever (its 4am now here in the UK)
If I man it out until lunchtime. Treat myself to an epic meal and have a few cold ones I reckon I could hit the sack in the afternoon, sleep majestically and then wake up early saturday morning feeling like a god.
More importantly however I need to be awake when the bank is open to sort out rent stuff.

Have you had the strong desire to drink grape juice or something similar? I saw or read somewhere that when someone was sleep deprived over a long period of time, they began graving grape juice obsessively. Since then I've been curious about some element specific to grape juice was tied to a chemical your body creates during sleep. Obviously I haven't put a lot of effort into researching this, but I'm just wondering.

Haha actually I have been drinking lots of strawberry and kiwi fruit juice and summer fruits high juice. Maybe its something in red fruit?

Dude. Go to sleep already. This is ridiculous. It's getting to the point where it sounds like you're no longer not-sleeping because you physically can't, but because you simply don't want to.

I'm not trying to be mean, but I'm coming from a background where I used to do this and people I know used to do this (we were all insane). I never actually pulled anything more than a single all-nighter, but I used to do the stay-up-til-4-AM, then be all "dudes look at me I stayed up til 4 AM lolololol" deal. Then I graduated and went on to grad school, and one of the student health services people talking at orientation was straight-up like, "Don't torture yourself staying up late working/doing whatever. It doesn't make you look good. Just stupid." And I was like "well... crap."

Apparently it's a real phenomenon. For us over-achiever/slightly-off-our-rocker types.

Basically, I'm just trying to say this....

Insomnia isn't a good thing neptune, sleep has several therapeutic purposes and although it may be novelty right now, you'll be doing yourself damage. Report the insomnia as an adverse effect to your doctor and...if you feel like it, perhaps take your health more seriously?

...except being more of an ass about it. :p

But seriously.

Sleep.

[edit] Man I feel really mean. If you really seriously cannot at all sleep, I apologize already.

Virus : http://www.physorg.com/news102610856.html that was interesting. I check the Physorg rss daily, too. Good science news site.

To dfc: You were the annoying side mission NPC with the voice actor I didn't like, and as Shepard I accidently pressed the 'dick move' button in my haste to skip the dialog.

As a consequence I now look like this:

Gah.. I'm just in a foul mood because I can't sleep.
I've just been staring at the ceiling for 1 and a half hours trying to sleep. I am really ****ing tired now and I am not having a good time.

Maybe the FBI have installed an automated filter on all my posts that makes everyone else see the complete opposite of what I type
/kathaksung

edit: Haha if all of kathaksung's posts were read with opposite meanings could he be interpreted as a normal person?

Did you go to the doctor? Insomnia can be fatal.

I was under the impression that it could only be fatal if someone or something was actively preventing you from sleeping. Is there not a point where you would simply fall asleep because the brain would get too tired?
eg falling asleep at the wheel/on the bus/at work accidently without realising because you were a little too tired?

I was supposed to go visit the GP yesterday but it was either bus fare or food for the day :/
Once it hits 9am I'll be on the phone.

And you seem to be beyond that point, but yet still not asleep.

I'm gonna treat myself to some new clothes, a big hearty meal and some whiskey. The aim is to be snuggled in the duvet sleeping before nightfall.

While not strictly sleeping tablets, I could take 8-12mg of melatonin aswell to induce drowsiness as a final measure
