The new Pirates of the Caribbean game looks pretty darn great, but what had my jaw on the floor was this vid:

Captain Jack.

The model is very nicely detailed but its the subtle feminine/drunk nuances of his character that really shine through in the tremendously impressive animations. Wow, I am very excited to see the review for this next month!!

Holy shit! But I don't know about fem, it's more of a Keith Richards drug-induced stuper, captures the character from the movie perfectly though. Looks absolutely breathtaking.

nice ..I'm guessing it's not Pirates of the Carribbean online? it's a single player pc game?

Holy heck, that looks like the Assassin's Creed engine.

Wow. Those animations are so close to the real thing.

Wow ... that looks amazing. Definitely not what you would expect from a movie tie-in game, absolutely stunning. It's not just the animation either, although that is the most impressive part ... the whole game looks great.

However the game with the best animation will probably be Drakes Fortune, the new Naughty Dog game. The Jak series was easily one of the best animated games of last generation and they seem to be placing even more of a focus on it for the current gen. Something like a few thousand unique animations for any given action, like taking cover or crouching. It beats the hell out of using the same canned animations over and over and even Euphoria's unique but somewhat awkward looking dynamic animations (judging by the Indiana Jones tech demo).

When i saw this thread i did not expect this. Those do look very good.

Looks like its running on a console but can't really tell, just didn't scream PC.

Xbox360, look at the filename, look up the game on Google or whatever. :p

Meh, they werent that great. I have a strong hunch that they were mocapped too. I mean, they already have all the mocap data they need from the films...

The drunken looking-around animation looked like it started to loop itself again right at the end when he stops walking.

Graphics look very nice, as do the animations.

But what is the gameplay like?

Looks like a fun adventure with lots of NPCs. Wonder what it is, must be an RPG?

Animations are good but nothing outstanding compared to other games, love the graphics though.

There are a lot of Pirates of the Caribbean games coming out in May to tie-in with the release of the third movie. This version is the 360/PS3 version which should easily be the most impressive, though the Wii version looks fun too and by the sound of some of the vids at gametrailers.com they got some pretty top-notch sound-alikes to do the voices.

Oh, and I think the standing around, drunken animation is one of the best 'idle' animations out there. :)

Wow, using technology to make a video game look good ? Horrible !

while his mannerisms do look realistic, I cant get over the fact that hsi movements somewhat remind me of Jar Jar Binks: exaggerated all the time

It takes no skill to do mocap, therefore its unimpressive. Actual animators are just becoming "cleanup" guys for mocap now, it sucks.

Its not like leaving all the animation to a licensed engine like Euphoria or some such is all that impressive either you know....

Not at all unlike his onscreen counterpart. ;)

well I just watched about 30 minutes of Pirates for the first time the other day (ya ya) and while he does have very expressive mannerisms it's not the same all the time ..ok granted the video posted is a work in progress and they'll add different animations so as to not to make look the same all the time ..it's a good start imho ..it's his hand held up high when walking animation was just a bit much

doesnt mean the game doesnt look great ..btw open ended?

Did I say it was? Im against anything that puts good animators out of work.

So does this mean you like 'em canned and scripted then?

The sad fact is that no one wants this sort of thing anymore, but I totally feel you because I appreciate the 2D sprite animations of old, like the ones used in the old Lucasarts adventure titles, for example. ;(

..btw open ended?
I fear it isn't, but cripes I hope it is!!! After all, that sort of freedom is what being a pirate is all about man!!!

EDIT: Jeebus I am an idiot for double-posting. Sorry admins!! *braces self for slap on wrist*

"canned and scripted" can look very good if you do it right. It just takes some time and work, which is why they arnt doing it anymore I guess.
