UK news site The Register is reporting that Wal-Mart has stopped taking pre-orders for the controversial game Bully after a lawsuit filed by Jack Thompson in Florida circuit court named the retailer as a defendant. Thompson targeted the big box store for "recklessly pre-selling Bully to children with no age rating having even been affixed to the game."
Story.

Sickening. This man must stop. Hopefully Amazon and Toys R Us will have more sense than to crumble in front of his draconian worldview. HE is the one being the bully!!!

I don't get it. The game has no rating so why can he file a lawsuit with Wal-Mart? It's not like they can get the game before the rating comes out. And even when the game comes out and the game has a Teen or Mature rating, Wal-Mart can still ask for ID when people come to pick it up.

Thompson said he wanted to assess the game before deciding to take action against its release in Florida under public nuisance laws. But Take Two Interactive, the game's publisher, had refused to send him a copy, despite giving viewings to what he said were sympathetic games journalists. So he demanded a copy of the game through the courts.

Sorry Thompson, there's no obligation for them to give you the game just because you request it. You have to wait until it's released like everyone else.

We should kill him. It would be kinda ironic, but I think it would help the world.

martyr

I'd feel bad, but it's walmart.

If walmart wants to lose money to their ballsier competitors, more power to them.

There are people who buy videogames from Wal-Mart?

Lol, I love how he's trying to get the court to force T2 to give him a copy of the game...heheh silly man.

Oh yeah, you should edit the title to say "Jack Thompson makes an ass of himself... again". :p

this is really bad ..the world's largest retailer caves into wacko jacko? This cant be good for the gaming industry

There is no reason for them to risk anything though, they have other fronts to get profit.

Basically, if the game sells well at other places and ends up not being the plague in disguise like Jackass says, they will probably start to carry it, and won't have lost much cause not many hardcore gamers go to walmart for launch day unless they have no other choice anyways. On the other hand, if it does indeed turn out to be evil in it's purist form, they would be safe from blame. It's win win for them.

You know, wasn't there a time when insane people were locked up?

Actually, the game looks quite interesting. I never would have come up with such an idea.

And Columbine simulator? I don't see any guns....

again it's the world's largest retailer ..do you really think the sales of one game will affect them in any way? no this is much bigger than that ..wacko jacko threatened them where it counts: bad publicity ..the worst kind of bad publicity: aimed at parents/children

oh and btw they're still sellling the game ..just not taking pre-orders based on the fact that it's unrated and may be used in a lawsuit against take two

Then what's the problem if they're selling it? If they do decide to pull it, no big deal, they're just playing safe. It will still sell good everywhere else, and once the controversy dies down, they will start selling it, and possibly start disreguarding everything Jackass says as BS.

Also, Walmart, to me, seems to sell more games to kids anyways, and they shouldn't buy it in the first place. Most the people that would buy Bully in the first place would probably head to BestBuy or Gamestop.

it sets a precedent. Jack sent out threats to Target, Best Buy and others. The fact that the biggest of the bunch caved under pressure says a lot about retailers anxiety around negative press associated with video games; it's the scapegoat du jour

Yeah, but it from the way it is right now, Jack will be beaten and will lose credibility. I'm calling it right now, it's a temporary scare that nothing will come out of.

that's what people said about hot coffee. However I agree this is a minor incident ..more about exposing Jacko's idiocy than anything else ..I mean "columbine simulator"? come on

All in all, this'll just be another chapter in the retarded history of censoring whatever scares christians most.

Judging by all the nonsense that once affected rock music and violent movies, this'll be largely blown over by the end of the decade.

As long as there's Rockstar there to take the flack and sell millions of games, we're safe.
Capitalism trounces morality any day of the weak.

What really frightens me is the possibility that Bully will end up being really shitty, like Manhunter or whatever that game was called.

No, the last thing we need is an anti-game marter (sp?).
I'm with The Brick, we could make it look like an accident. Invite him to some sort of anti-video game activists awards night, loosen a couple of bolts holding up the lights on stage, he walks up, bada bing, bada boom. Problem solved.

Note: I'm only half kidding.

He'll die of natural causes soon enough. No need to rush the process.

I'm sure deep down inside, Jack Thompson would love to be killed by someone who plays videogames.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's already written the angry letter, to be mass-faxed to bewildered police stations around the world as soon as he cacks.

what was wrong with manhunt? i liked that game.
Seconded. I loved that game! The over-the-top violence and stealth made it seriously fun and disturbing to play. The Pigman is arguably one of the most disturbing characters in videogaming, esp. the level with just you and him!!

Argh, I hate Jack Thompson.

He is the second person I ever wanted to be stabbed brutally in an alleyway by Mario.

Pah, when he is dead everyone will be laughing.
