I think it's the right time to confess my SiO2phobia (glass-phobia). I once smelted glass in my high-temp furnace. Picture a very soft sticky chewing gum type substance that likes to form long thin strips that when cool, can shatter into thousands of tiny razor sharp pieces...that's glass when you heat it up to 800C.
I don't know if you know...but the neon lamp glass is the worst kind. It shatters literally into razorblades.

The article said neon, but you're right...they are probably fluorescent (which is even worse IMO...mercury). But the glass tube is the same for both cases.
