It's only recently that I started to really get into pure jazz, after visiting a couple of jazz bars/clubs and I realized that I realized the pure non-syncopated melodies blended where blues,myxolidian or middle-eastern raga scales knew no boundaries. And all that bad ass drumming as well with all those odd-time signatures..

I know the jazz genre is pretty huge, there are all kinds out there so please post more awesome tunes as such or more.
 
I've been trying to get into more as well, but it's pretty daunting to break into, especially when the bulk of it sounds a bit dull to my ears. Must be all that metal ruining it for me.

Anyway, I've posted him around here before, but check out some Avishai Cohen. His stuff has a nice contemporary feel to it which makes it easy to get into, but he doesn't shy away from complex playing/songwriting. I'd advise you to start with Continuo and Gently Disturbed, but that's mostly since they have one of my favourite drummers on. :)

I've been dying to get into jazz good and proper as well but I have no idea where to start.
The kind of jazz I'm interested in are the kind of songs you hear in old lounges and noir detective films.

That Avishai Cohen stuff is ace though, definitely going to check his stuff out.
 
I think the best entry point is the giant of the 50s, the heyday of jazz, like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker.

And if you want really avant-garde and experimental jazz, check out Miles Davis' Bitches Brew from 1970. There is no other album in the world that sounds like that.
 
John Coltrane and Charlie Parker are awesome. Though I think I'm liking those bands that are a mix of the bebop and modern smooth jazz style. Been tabbing a couple of Charlie Parker songs onto guitar for play recently though, like donna lee, good stuff.

As for that band bad hat..pretty awesome too..though it's more of jazz fusion rock but I'm liking it too..
 
Django Reihardt is very good, but one of my friends has been listening to him non-stop for six months now.

I just can't listen to him no more. :( Did you know one of his hands was pretty ****ed up? Still an amazing guitarist. :p

Can't say I've been listening to jazz that much, but its sweet, especially Coltranes stuff. :)
 
Yeah. Hand was pretty much paralyzed for the most part, yet he kept playing. Yeah I'm a bit burnt out on him myself after listening a year straight.
 
Hm. People posting Coltrane. I like his Improv and I really like his compositions but I don't like listening to him too much. Doesn't have my favorite sound.

Also, this reminds me that I need to get my lips in shape for marching band again. Taking a semester off from playing has absolutely killed my range and endurance.
 
Really want to head over to Chicago some time, never seen the states, just to chill in the Jazz clubs.
