A comment posted by Joss Whedon (or someone acting on his behalf) has been posted on the director's facebook page. It says the following:
'In talks with Gabe Newell of Valve Corporation to direct a Half Life film starring Nathan Fillion after Avengers is complete.'
This is the official page of the director Joss Whedon who also created the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. This is by no means a definitive confirmation at this early stage. Facebook.[br]UPDATE: As per usual we cannot trust facebook fully. From the website whedonesque.com, their twitter feed has just been updated saying:
The news about Joss Whedon directing a Half Life movie is bogus. It came from a Facebook account that pretends to be him.

Joss Whedon is not the first name that came to my mind whenever I envisioned a Half-Life movie. But then I do think he's likely to be a tad more respectful in his approach to the material than, say, Michael Bay.

Still don't know if I even want a Half-Life movie though. I could only see it working in a story separate from the games, but we all know that what we really want to see deep down inside is Gordon crowbarring some alienz.

If Nathan is anyone other than Barney, then that is bad casting.

Best news evar.

I've long been of the opinion that a HL movie cannot focus on Gordon, so here's hoping it's more Blue Shift based.

everyone complaining about comics/books/games being made into movies in film section to thread in 5 4 3 2 oh wait no they won't it's actually something they care about it can't work both ways like this

People seem desperate for anything related to Half-Life.

So am I. The hunger.

Haha. It said possible Half-Life movie when I saw it on the forum index and by the time the news section had finished loading the little of the thread had changed to Half-Life movie bogus.

The internet is going too fast for me nowadays...

if joss weedon made a halflife movie, alyx would be a strong badass woman thats mentally weak by her love to gordon since there would have dificulties in theyr relationship

cuz yes alyx would be in it,and nihilant would be some guy whit some makeup instead ofthe nihilant we know, that is constantly appearing trough the place to challenge freeman and alyx, gman is some intelectual guy that helps them and at the end they all board the serenity

and is a musical

Josh Whedon of TV series for teenage girls? No, thanks.

I've seen Gabe saying that they would never agree with a HL movie... And I totally agree with him!

Uh, when did he say that exactly? :dozey:

He said if they got a decent script, they'll talk. But not the usual Hollywood action movie script.

I think that's why he said he would never agree... Haha... Well, I read that back in 2005 by the time DOOM was playing in the theaters... So I have no idea where I read it

Sure, I'm sure you guys want Half-Life to be an independent European film, not some stupid Hollywood action movie...

Or a good non-hollywood action film, like Children of Men.

Not really. This, for example, is pretty awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ixFf4ljuCg&feature=related

I don't want Gordon Freeman flying with a motorcycle through a helicopter, and nuke a tank while he's having sex with a German blonde babe.

Here's the interview btw:

Eurogamer: Talking of Hollywood, has anyone from the movie world come up with a decent Half-Life movie script yet?

Gabe Newell: They all sucked!

Eurogamer: In what way did they suck?

Gabe Newell: They're just bad movies - movies that shouldn't get made. I'm a huge fan of movies, I love going to movies and we have absolutely no reason to do it. It's not like they've offered us these giant buckets of cash and said "let us go and ruin your game" [laughs]. They offer you little tiny amounts of cash, so it's like they've not even tried to bribe us to go and make a bad movie. So it's the one thing we're going to hold on to. Unless it's a great movie, unless it's as exciting a movie as the game was a game then it will never get made.

Eurogamer: Is it just that they're not really in tune with what Half-Life's about and don't get it?

Gabe Newell: No, I just think that there's an attitude right now that they're trying to exploit the built-in audience of gamers right now and they don't really care whether the movies are any good. I think there's also this element of financing in Germany where they don't really care how profitable the movies are either, so you have this collision of people who are not long-term stakeholders who just think 'what are the next five movies I can crank out before the German government closes this tax loophole?' and 95 per cent of the gaming movies are being made specifically for those reasons.

Eurogamer: Do you make a point of watching them just to see how bad they can be?

Gabe Newell: Yes [longest sigh ever]. I have to put on my professional 'I'm doing this for the company' hat, not the 'I'm a movie go-er whose soul is going to be crushed by another unbelievably crappy game adaptation' one.

J.J. Abrams is the best suited, and I bet even he would realize it just doesn't work as a movie.

the problem i have with this video is everytime i finish watching it i think ''wow they've done a really good job with the cgi and props!'' and not ''wow that was a really good short film''

in one way it's good, but only because certain attention to details have been met, whereas others... not so much. but hey, it's a short film funded on a ridiculously low amount of cash so what am i to say.

he would be influenced by 80's movies and make the gman to say some ridles to gordon to exit some dimension and adds maths too,and everything will be filmed in shaky hand held camera

and at the end everything would be a dream

It's quite good by short YouTube fanfilm standarts, that's all.

Sure, all Hollywood movies are like that...

I only post that movie to show that I'm not against any movie adaptation of HL. It just needs to feel real to the game. This is what that YouTube film accomplishes.

Agreed, and like all good video game narratives should be, is largely independent of the main characters. Having said that, I think most of us would be happy for, say, a movie set around the Black Mesa survivors (Kleiner, Eli, Barney etc.) and the military/civilians during the Seven Hour War, since it would be independent of the games and Freeman.

If there's a Mass Effect film I would like something similar (Sessler mentioned the First Contact War with the Turians to be a good setting), but this being hollywood I expect them to screw it up royally.

I feel pretty out of the loop when rumors I've never heard of get debunked.

I'm so happy to hear that this is fake. Words can not describe how I feel.
