Jumpgate Evolution

Just got mail from Codies, announcing an open beta for the space sim MMO Jumpgate Evolution. Supposedly this is a total reworking of the original Jumpgate game which I hadn't even heard of until today. The premise looks promising though and since space sims aren't released often anymore I'll jump on any chance I get to play one. Does anyone know a bit more about this game?

On topic though: I found a quite extensive preview on Eurogamer.

Jumpgate: Evolution is a low-budget MMO, and despite the glossy looks, it shows. That's not necessarily a bad thing. While the majority of NetDevil's staff is tasked with creating the inevitably huge LEGO Universe, those ten guys are beavering away on a labour of love, and that's rare in the juggernaut-dominated world of MMOs. "Jumpgate is the game we started our company to make," says Brown. "We said, let's go back and take another shot at it. I think the work they're doing is just amazing. A small group of guys going, let's take our baby and see what we can do."

So did anyone play, or is someone still playing the original?

Heh, everyone's shocked.

I played the original, it was great fun... basically like a Freespace/Freelancer MMO.
Fighting was really fun, lots of tactics involved.

Sweet, sounds good. The only thing that's slightly off-putting for me is the lack of story. It's basically a big sandbox. I wonder how they're gonna make the universe feel alive. Or is there a lot of lore involved with the different nations?

Just traded, upgraded, explored, and blew shit up.
