Ok, so i'm a junior in high school and one of the requirements for graduation is to take personal financing 11th grade.

This class has gotta be the easiest class evar.

anyway, one of the first things we gotta do this year is buy 10 grand (fake $'s of course) of stock and follow their growth/decline over the semester. We must spread this 10 grand over 8 stocks.

So, any suggestions? of course i have already bought vivendi stock (i expect at least slight growth when hl2 comes out) and google stock, but what else is expected to grow? Does Valve sell stock? i looked but couldn't find valve in the papers.

AOL to watch it go down :D

Boeing is also good stock

hehe, Videndi stock isn't going to go up. You've just got burned. Financial reports are always lagged. HL2 won't affect Vivendi that much.

Hot Sectors
- Oil/energy Companies
- Most technology companies (look beyond the typical Intel, AMD companies, focus on business to business techonology companies)
- Companies focusing on global business.
- Companies that produce semi-precious materials (scrap metal, copper, etc) Stay away from companies that use semi-precious materials

Bad Sectors
- All financial companies
- basic consumer goods (like food, toliet paper, etc)
- American automotive companies

[Edit]: Probably beyond your scope in terms of compelxity and time commitment, take a look "annual reports." They have the wealth of info that a 10K has but has valuable business info. They often provide warnings (sometimes written othertimes by the tone of how it is written) and let you know about upcoming business plans.

Diversify!

btw, is it called the stock market game perchance?

we had to do that in econ class.

My friend had a similar class. Invest in Harry Potter's publisher. Once the next book comes, you're rich!

That might be true but I don't think he'll get very far witk just 10k.

Saw a fund (well that's the Swedish word for it. A bundle of different stocks combined so you won't have to deal with everything yourself) which contained Electronic Arts a while back. One of those funds cost around 7k.
