Ok I have onboard 6 channel AC97 sound. All with centre/rear outputs etc etc.

Now i hooked up everything correctly. But when I use the CSS sound test the front/rear speakers are DEADLY quiet. But centre is loud as. All the volume controls are up to the max in the drivers.

So close to hl2 release and this happens please help me. please. Even if u got 5.1 speakers and had the same problem it will help me out.

what kind of 5.1 surround sound headphones do u have?

Make sure you have 5.1 speakers set in your windows audio settings.
Also, I believe the AC97 lets you change which jacks go to what sound. Make sure you have the jacks configured correctly.
Then make sure you have the correct audio settings in CS:Source.
Last, (or first) make SURE you have the headphone jacks plugged in correctly.

I have the exact same problem.

Everything works fine with FarCry, Doom III, MOHPA, etc. But with CSS only the front speakers work. Weird.

I've email Valve but haven't got any response whatsoever. Oh well... :dozey:

BTW, my mobo MSI K8N Neo with Realtek'97 onboard sound.

Mine is a Gigabyte. But yep Realtek'97. So it must be a bug with counter-strike then.

So what sound do u use then in cs source?

Try playing around in the Counterstrike sound menu, I think you change speaker quaility settings and how many you have.

What do you mean what sound? What settings? System?

As far as I can remember, I think I use 5.1 (also tried 2.1) with an external amplifier (5.1, DTS ready) but with no success.

I've tried to connect my computer through optical and analog cable (one cable for each speaker). I've got best results (no quality wise) with analog since only the two front speakers are recognized when I go optical. With analog, I do get 5.1 except in CSS... That figures...

:hmph:

Same here...that test is crap...5.1 my headphones work great in games though...

one more idea..I have an audigy sound card, and sometimes you
have to make sure Windows / proprietary software (like my audigy control) / and the game, if necessary, are all set to the same thing (for example, all set to 5.1)

I have this problem with HL2 :( Does anyone know how to fix it?

Moderators: could you please move this to "Steam & HL2 Support"? I would like to avoid creating multiple threads (and maybe somebody will help me there!) ;(

Yep I'm using that one. There is a beta driver there aswell. I'm trying it!!!

Any luck with the beta driver?

Care to share the link. Is it the beta for the XP 64 edition? I've tried this one and of course, since I have regular XP, there is no sound at all when I restart. So I'm back with the old driver...

I can see we're not alone with this problem (and it seems it's not only Realtek onboard related).

I guess we can only wait for a patch...

Ok peoples with Realtek AC97 sound. This has been a very common problem and I found a fix.

Most people download the latest Realtek sound drivers from the Realtek website. Thinking it was a good idea. DON'T!!!!

Someone pointed out on the Steam forums you have to download the drivers from your motherboard website. I did this today. Got full 5.1 surround sound for my headphones. And it's awesome.

Enjoy...
