What a depressing book! In case you don't know, the Mist was a short story be Stepehn King that was one of the insitations for the original Half life.

Oooh, I've been meaning to read that for years but I could never find it or be hugely bothered to go out of my way to find it. Worth getting?

I've been trying to find it for years. Where did you get it?

I haven't read The Mist in a very long time, but I do remember most of it. Basically, it's about a mist that engulfs a town following a terrible storm. It focuses on a group of people trapped in a grocery store. The mist is as a giant white wall when viewed from the outside, slowly inching forward and engulfing everything in it's path. From the inside it's impossible to see farther than a few feet in front of you, and given the odd behavior and sudden appearance of this mist, the grocery group is a bit apprehensive about just waltzing out the door. Soon enough they hear screams in the distance, along with roaring, and the ground itself shakes as if something huge were lumbering about in the parking lot, just beyond view. I won't spoil anything, but the group does encounter the "things" lurking in the mist, and eventually begin to split off into factions, each one suspicious of the other. I'm sure I'm missing tons of cool details, it was quite a while ago that I read it, but I do remember enjoying the story.

Edit: The story itself can be found in the book Skeleton Crew, which is easy to find, and happens to contain some other really nice short stories as well. "The Monkey" is one of my favorites.

Can somebody give a short summary?

Basically, a group of people get stuck in a supermarket in Maine. There's a mist that's very thick and monsters are coming out of it. It has to do with some military project. Some people escape from the market in a car and they find out that the mist is everywhere. The story ends with them still inside the car, drifiting.

The story was an inspiration for SH too.

i got the book from my cousin

SH does have mist everwhere :D man that's an atmospheric game (so is hl2)

SH? Silent Hill?

The whole unseen beasties and paranoid factions reminds me of The Thing. That was a great film and a great game too.

Silent hill had a thick mist in which monsters came out from......

I liked it, you can see where games like Silent Hill got some of there inspiration from. I read it quite a while ago, I've forgotton the collection of stories it's included in.

Just found it, it's included in Steven King's book "Skeleton Crew". Oops, somebody already found it!

I liked it. I especially enjoyed how the people in the store evolved into their own different mini-societies during the story. I didn't think it was depressing for a King story, like for instance Firestarter or Pet Semetary.

Which reminds me, I was in the middle of reading Firestarter. I think I put it down at about chapter 3... a few weeks ago >_<
