Kamakiri's Theory of HL2 About To Go Gold!

they told the benchmark guys not to use AA OR AF because it would not reflect the performance of the final product>>> tells me they are still working on the graphic card performance to the last possible day. Even if it is gold ready they won't say it till the last possible second. If spit had asked how long to get it to shelves from gold we might know .. someone should email gabe on this even an aproximate would be helpful i knowing days before if they are going to make it.

It was also mentioned that the Benchmark didn't have HDR in it. And obviously they've done that because the new Source video demostrated it. (Also, the Video appeared to have AA enabled).

I think the Benchmark was also a slightly older build then they are up to. A bit like the first Press showing was with an older build and the E3 showing was with an older build.

Valve seem to have a habit of showing what's done instead of trying to make a new build to show journalists.

Well I did go there between 12:00 noon to about 12:45...maybe everyone else was on lunch break?

That could be but you have to take into consideration that corporate enviorments aren't like high school. They don't ring a bell at noon and everyone gets in a single file line and Gabe directs them to the lunch room everyday. : D :D

In a the workworld people are adults and people go to lunch whenever they feel like it, 11, 12, 1, 2, sometimes after 3 oclock.

ill only beleive it if it comes from valve themselves as a "official" statement.

yeah me too
there are a lot of 'fanboys' out there who wants to spread bad news about hl2 and good news about theyr beloved game i.e. doom3 fanboys :)

im so confused what does going gold actually mean does it mean a massive amount of pre-orders? Or potential buying etc. This game is gaurnteed to be the biggest selling game ever imho. You cant crack it and play it online because of steam and if you add up all the people who currently play hl1 mods especiallly cs dod tfc etc. Then you have all the people who are interested in the way it will go. Word of mouth, i work in game and ive been telling everyone who comes in looking for a fps to buy hl2 when it comes out.

<<excited

going gold is when a game is finished and is ready to go into production.

Going gold means that the game is finished and copyed on a "master disk" who used to have the color gold. From then there will be some weeks/days before the game actually comes out

EDIT: was a little late

It was a double negative.

The Geforce 2 thing is probably the "Optimisations for lower spec systems" that Doug Lombardi was mentioned in the Computer and Video Games ECTS interview.

Apparently it's ugly stuff. Probably tedious, because you do so work and all you end up is a slightly higher frame rate. It's not like writing some code that does something really cool. But it's necessary for people with lower system specs to have an enjoyable game experience.

Also, thanks Kamakiri.

Woohoo! Dell Dimension XPS B866 w/ 256 rdram, Geforce 2 Ultra 64mb!!!

HDR/Dx9/Industrial Light & Magic... HERE I COME!

Now here is what i'm thinking

when spitcodfry went to valve and asked if they were going to make a gold announcement, Gabe said they would before it got sent to the retailers or sumthing. Now whats to say that the game isn't already been sent to the presses and already gold? Because its not at the retailers yet.... :bounce:

just a thought

I'm slightly worried about the 'chuckle' that Gabe did before saying "We'll see".

The way I'm hearing that in my head is that Gabe recently decided that Sept. 30th was off and that they were aiming for a mid-to-end October release. For the past few days he would've been thinking "right, we need to make sure this gets out in October" over and over in his mind.

So when Spitcodfry mentioned the 30th again Gabe naturally chuckled because he realised that people were really still believing that Valve can get it out in time. The "We'll see" was just to cover up his chuckle. If he was actually still working towards the 30th I don't imagine him chuckling. It would've been a genuinely nervous "We'll see" without any chuckle before it.

I'm thinking about this way too much.............need sleep.............

i always interpreted that chuckle as "if i could get a nickel every time someone asked me that!" or something similar.

Or maybe he expected him to ask, just like millions of ppl probably email him about it everyday do. As in what was going through Gabe's mind when he asked "haha I knew he was going to ask.." .

This is kinda off topic a bit...but the 30th kinda snuck up on me... I've been just busy with school and stuff, checking the forums, partying...and I haven't checked the date recently... I didn't realize it's already the 19th. That means if it does come out the 30th here in Grand Forks...I'll have HL2 not this coming week...but in the beginning of the week after that... That just hit me all of a sudden.

Did the 30th sneak up on anyone else here?

Didn't wanna make a new thread about this because that's just a sure way to get the shit flamed outta me...

Yes, it has come all of a suddenly... :)

I've had faith in the date ever since it was first announced earlier this year, and it's only been the last couple of days where the doubts are really starting to kick in.... :(

The problem with that is that if there are major bugs, they'd probably require a fair bit of play testing to make sure they were actually fixed; you can't just say, 'phew, finally fixed those bugs' without checking that they haven't broken anything else or aren't occuring at a different place. I'd say if they want to release it on Sep 30, they'd want to have NO major bugs, and ideally no bugs on their bug list at all, except maybe really small bugs, or balancing issues.

Note: I'm not in the industry or anything, this is just my opinion based on what I know about software development. It's possible that they can do a complete bug fix and test cycle within 24 hours, in which case I guess they could be fixing stuff right to the gold date. Of course, they'll have to have gone gold a reasonable time before release to get them distributed, etc., as has been mentioned in other threads.

My thoughts exactly :-]

Yeah same... I hardly think it was a "That's-What-We-Wanted-You-To-Think" evil cackle.
But then I wasn't there, so what do I know?

Maybe it was a deep-evil-MWUHAHAHAHAHAaaa-I'm-Fragmaster-in-a-Gabe-suit kind of chuckle.

Actually I thought it meant:

"Yeah, if Mike Harrington finally sorts out those last few bugs, I mean the guy has a beard longer than Santa and I don't think he's seen had any sleep for the past few nights. We're thinking of just hooking up to a caffeine supply because he's moulded to his seat and can't move at all."
