Kicked: Ping is too high?

Has there been some sort of stealth update for Steam? Because now every CS:S server I used to play on will kick me if I try playing with anything higher than 200 ping- and for once Admin mod isn't involved.

Is this just a cvar I've missed, or can I expect all servers to shoot me on sight? Seems strange that they'd all change their house rules, that's all...

Hmm, I've got a nagging suspicion that some upstanding pillar of the community may have done something to my install. Actually, make that outstanding pillock of the community, I'm in no mood for irony.

I'm well aware that a mod allows for that sort of functionality (encounter it fairly often in fact) but every single server did it- but on a hunch I reverted to my cache backup and it works fine :O

It's obviously not a problem anymore but is it even possible for admins/malignant players to do something like that to a player? A bit like a traditional HL slowhack but with timed kicks? I just can't think of any explanation as to why reverting to my backup allowed me to play on my usual servers as normal
