Kinda dumb question about my mobo's integrated graphics

I'm wondering whether the Intel Integrated Extreme 3D Graphics 2 on my motherboard would be better than my 5200. I'm guessing not performance wise, maybe visual quality wise? Anybody know? It's integrated graphics 2.

That would be a negative. I think I have a fried Nvidia Riva TNT card lying around somewhere that could probably outperform your integrated graphics card.

Horrible performance. I don't even think Intel's integrated graphics has hardware T&L, much less pixel shading capabilities.

My brother had that, he got a 52 on 3DMark 03, and could only run 1 game test. I bought him a 5200FX PCI, and he now gets around 1000 3D Marks.

Yup I got 1032 on 3DMark03. Well so much for that idea. I keep trying to think of ways to improve my graphics until Xmas, but I dunno. Do you think a Matrox Millenium G200 AGP would be better? I highly doubt it.

hell no. matrox's suck. dont worry the 5200 is fine till you get the 6600GT (your getting it, right?)

I feel for you, but the G200 is ancient. To put this into a time frame you may understand, the G200 came out 2.5 generations before the original Nvidia Geforce came out.

It would perform horrible, if any games could use it.

The best bet is to overclock your card. The FX5200 Ultra is actually a decent performer. So bumping up your clock speeds may help with performance.

Huh well I was thinking but no I'll just have to tough it out. Although, my new case and hs/f does give me much better cooling. My 5200 has Samsung memory, I checked when I put in the new case. Rivatuner says the memory is 64-bit though. How much do you think I could overclock if I did this?

52! And I bet that was from the CPU test.

you think thats bad?

i got a 56, on a p4 1.6, uneven unmatched horrible pc100 ram, one bigger than the other. shitty 845 mobo, and a GF2 mx400,

3dmark03 score was 56ish, talk about shitty computer parts. not complaining, got all my work processing done.

Actually a GF2 MX is better than his Intel gfx. Just they both don't run the tests under 3Dmark2003 and your system might be running the CPU tests slower than his.

You have to try and see. See the sticky above for some pointers.

You can have some fun with this, and gain some extra performance. For $10 bucks, you can buy a heatsink/fan replacement that should be better than the passive heatsink you already have. That will allow you to overclock better.

My card isn't passively cooled, it has a fan. Here's the one I have:

http://www.pny.com/products/verto/mainstream/5200pci.asp

I downloaded Coolbit and I'm happy to announce that I am now running my 5200 at 284mhz core 470mhz memory. Instead of moving the sliders I clicked on a button that said "Detect Optimal Frequencies" and it automatically tested it and chose the highest stable clocks it could get (At least I think it's the highest it can go) and then I tested it out in Medal of Honor Pacific Assault demo, I chose Pixel Shader 2 and it was pretty playable where before I need to use 1.1. Then I tried the Jedi Academy demo and I noticed it was faster, not bad at all for my first try.

I'm thinking about getting a cheap cooler just to help a little more, this $6 Zalman IceBerg on newegg looks good, what do you think?

Do you have a digitial camera you can take of your graphics card. I can't tell how good the cooler is on your graphics card. :/

Though it looks like it may be pretty good. As for the one you linked, does it look better than the one currently on your graphics card? If not, you may not need to replace it.

Well my sister has this thing called Digital Blue or something which can take pictures, but they're not good quality and I found some pictures on newegg that are pretty close up and should help:

They shipped it with a nice heatsink. My old 9600 Pro didn't even come with that good of a heatsink.

If you feel like ripping off your heatsink on your video card, go buy some Artic Silver 5 or Artic Cermaque. That way you can replace the cheap stuff on your video card and hopefully get lower temps and a better overclock. However, that is completely optional.

Hmm well then I don't think I'll waste my money on a new hs/f if my card has a nice one. I'll stick with this one. But I'm having a problem right now because CoolBits said that once you've found the best clocks check of "apply settings at startup" and I did then I restarted but every time I restart for some reason it goes back to the stock clocks so I have to overclock everytime I start the computer up. I'm using the 61.77 drivers downloaded from Nvidia.com. Do you know how to fix this?

No experience with that program. Most likely you have to save a profile for that overclock. That will allow you to have multiple overclocks (usefully for setting overclocks on a per-game basis).

Just as a tip, only use the overclock on graphically demanding games. For example, you don't need to use the OC when in windows or using CS, but you can use your OC when playing Doom 3 or Far Cry.

Well I got RivaTuner and used that instead, everything fine at 284/470, when it's in 2D mode (not in a game I guess) the GPU is clocked at it's stock speed of 250mhz although the memory stays at 470mhz. But you know what I have a feeling I can OC it even more, I just haven't actually tried it yet. And I've tested it using Coolbit and RivaTuner's tests, and MOH: Pacific Assault PS2.0, Jedi Academy, and Halo. So far so good, Halo I can now run 800x600 high very well before I had it running at 640x480 medium.
