So, I decided I would post my attempts at zbrush... The first one (after several "light" attempts) is my first real head study in Zbrush....

This one is a crappy, quick (like 20 mins. tops)second try, just to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything.

The last one here is my pride and joy so far, my third real sculpt attempt, and my most promising model so far. I deviated a little and did a skull because I figure I need more anatomy practice before tackling a human again... Anyway, here it is.

All of these are by me, any base meshes used were created by me, or simply started from a sphere (most often the case, but poles suck!)

Stay tuned for more progress... I hope.

Just another quickie... Trying new brush settings etc. I hope to really sit down and tackle a big project but, I'll be a dad any day now, so most of my attention is gonna' go to my family. Hope you like!

How come you keep stopping so early? You should try taking them a bit beyond the basic shapes and masses.

I am ready to really dig in and spend some serious time on one, I just can't decide what I would like to model most lol... Also, I've jumped into zbrush at the wrong time, I don't have much free time right now, with work, and my family and home changes going on. I'll have some new stuff up soon! :) Hopefully, this time a little more detailed mesh work (although I am still a little sketchy as to how to add fine detail like pours in skin, and minute wrinkles and moles and bloches, i'm also unsure of how to properly tack hair) I can only subdivide my mesh about 4 to 6 times before I run out of RAM and crash.... Any tips for optimizing, and detailing?

(btw thanks for the reply, I was affraid I'd never hear anything)

Very impressive. Also congratulations on the little one on the way, I hope it brings much happiness. You'll definitely be occupied alot of the time but when you need some time to unwind stick with this because it looks really good.

Thanks Hectic Glenn! I know one things for sure, pregnancy is a roller coaster ride. I have cycled through every positive and negative emotion, but ya' know, I don't think I'd take it back for anything :D

I'll post some more work in the next couple of days (I hope) In the meantime, enjoy some crappy 2d digitals lol

First up, le' deftones wallpaper I made many moons ago...
(an experiment with grunge brushes lol)

What follows next is a series of images I created while listening to specific songs, they really don't make much sense, they are just what kinda came out while listening to my music.

and the big fish...

Aside from the baby book I'm making for my son, I also wanted to recreate a favorite childrens book of mine called Arty the smarty, http://www.amazon.com/Arty-Smarty-Gb-Faith-McNulty/dp/044803431X
I just want to re-illustrate and tell the story with my own images, and dedicate it to him, just something he can show his children, and his children's children.

Figued I would have some more comments by now :p ah well, here is yet, another, head WIP, I am liking this one, I may or may not take this one a little further (even into projection master, I need the practice lol)

Hope you like... I think I'm improving, ever so slowly...

EDIT: This is a little cartoon proportioned head I did too, just a quick bunch of "sketches" :)

(this was a practice with flatten/pinch brushes)

Got to do a little more to the last "serious" head I was working on... Don't know if its any good or not :p

I might just try to keep working this one until I am happy with it, I don't know how to really make my sculpts stand out.

Looks pretty good. I see somethings you could fix though. So be forewarned... the rest of this post is a critique :).

Some things I've noticed from your last post, and from your first is that you're pushing in the skin way too much around the cheek bones. Its like you're modeling with only the skull in mind, when you need to realize there is muscle and fat that pad things out a bit. Right now it kinda looks like the skin is vacuum sealed around a skull, which makes it unnatural.

In your newest one, i think there are some proportional problems with the spacing between the bottom of his nose and his mouth. His mouth is also a bit wide, and the highest parts of his lips need to come closer to each other a lot. The bottom of his nose is a too flattened, and should be more fleshy and rounded out, which may actually fix the issue with the distance between his nose and mouth.

His eyes look like they're kinda on the sides of his head, and I think whats causing that is...

A: They're too far apart from each other, and
B: It seems that the inner corners of his eyes need to be pushed further back into the skull, and the outer corners need to be pulled forward more. It would be easier to tell if I could see a side view to say how much it needs to move. It looks like the eye isnt really sitting in the eye socket of the skull, because even looking at his brow, the eye is too far forward.

Take a look at this pic, and you can see the spacing between his nose and mouth, and how rounded out his nose is at the bottom, as well as how much of his eye you can see from the side, and how far sunken in the eye is compared to his brow ridge.

Krynn!!! Thats fantastic! Exactly what I was looking for, I haven't been really happy with the final look of all of these and I couldn't pin point what it was... But I think you've nailed it. Thank you so much for the detailed crit, and I'll definately refer back to your post when I start the next one. I see exactly what you mean about the cheek, and the eyes, I admit are very unfinished, and I wasn't happy with them either. The mouth and eyes are the most difficult area, and I just find myself tweaking and tweaking forever without satisfactory results. I guess I really should use a reference in the future, these were just doodled from the top of my head, and that is nearly impossible to get perfect proportions that way lol

but thanks again

Lets see if I can take your advice and really turn something good out on the next go!
