Lag/Crash+Resolution Reset

Okay every time I play a source game now in as little as 10 minutes to a few hours my game will go black and lag incredibly bad while repeating the reload sound. Most of the time my computer and game is able to pull through it and I can continue, sometimes I have to push my reset button. But afterwards my resolution will always be reset to 800 x 600. I never had this before and I don't know of any changes that may have caused this.

You can force it to 1024x768 by setting this in Launch Options: -gl -w 1024

Maybe I should clarify more, games that I'm running in 1024x768 stay that way but my desktop is reset to 800x600.

Not now, but when my comp was built I did that as a novelty.

Yes I've had HL2 from it's release.

EDIT: New development. Crash all the way to desktop and I get this error message:

Why is it taking a snapshot in the 1st place?
