LAN/Network Help Please

I am in an apartment right now with a couple other people.

We have a router in which the cable connection goes to, then from there it is channeled into each of our rooms. Now my other two roomates can see each other on the network just fine (they see eachother's shared folders and can transfer files very quickly through MSN or AIM).

I on the other hand can see the other two, but cannot send them files through MSN or AIM and I can only drop files onto their computers, not the other way around. They don't see any file transfers I try to start with them, and when they try to access my computer, they get an error message telling them that they don't have permission.

I disabled the firewall, I tried messing with a few router settings, I tried redoing my network setup stuff with various options...but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

I think this is also contributing to another problem. We can see eachother's WC3 games we make on the LAN.

Any help would be greatly appreciated....and awarded...with..various smileys...or something..

Ok.. I've decided to change the reward to a Battlefield 1942 CD Key. I *ahem* acquired it from a Computer Renaissance store while they were in the back making crappy CAT5's for me so it should work just fine. I doubt they play online over there...

What OS are you using? And what OSes are your roommates using?

Make sure you keep your firewall on. Thats not your problem and is putting your computer at risk.

Network problems, in my experience are usually the hardest ones to diagnosis and fix.

You could also try

- Making sure you are all in the same workgroup
- Using the home networking wizard provided by windows.

WinXP for me, and one of my roomates. The other has Win98. (The only possible thing I could see as a problem here would be I have XP Professional and my other XP roomate has Home...because it seems Win98 and XP Home can work together just fine).

Same workgroup
Tried the home networking wizard numerous times using different options.
