Hi, I have a question, Since i have HL2, and my friend does not.. are we able to just have a LAN party if he were to just copy my folder over to his, Or how does that work? I have backed up my games thru steam, but i dont know what purpose that serves though.

Just wanna play HL2 with a freind who does not have the money to buy it?

Any thoughts?

Are you saying you want to do a LAN multiplayer party with your friend over the internet...
:I

Cause you kind of can't, its called Singleplayer for a good reason.:E

I'm guessing you mean HL2 Deathmatch as there is no multiplayer in HL2
If you want to lan on Deathmatch you will need to log into your account on both PCs . Copy your folder over and log into your steam account.
However if you cannot play together over the internet on the same account as you will both get kicked.

Isn't there a co-op mod? But still, you both would need seperate copies.

Edit: perhaps not? I thought it would log you off of one when you logged on to another. I guess not in offline mode.

He did say 'Lan party' which I assume he doesn't mean Hamachi, so in that case it's over a network / router.

As to the OP on whether it's feasible, I'm actually not sure but I wouldn't think so. You could try verifying one for offline mode first and then disconnect to let your friend try it...

As far as i know, when playing via Lan is doesn't matter. I've played CS:S and Deathmatch with 8 PCs all using my account on Lan. No offline mode was required. Although as soon as i tried to play online against one of then with my account we both got kicked.

It's possible. Just copy all the files from your computer to his, then log off steam on your end, log on to steam with your account on this PC. Then, log off, and you both should be able to start in Offline mode.

you dont need to go into offline mode. you can have an unlimited amount of people on one account if you are just doing lan.

I guess they changed this since the earlier days of Steam. That was the only way I was able to get it working with a big ol' Lan.

Is there some "LAN" setting somewhere?

nope,if you set up a server it will show on the internet and the lan network, but everyone who joins over lan will be able to play with the same account.

No, and i dont know why it never e-mailed me saying that someone replied..LOL.. and what your talking about "Are you saying you want to do a LAN multiplayer party with your friend over the internet" thats called Deathmatch.:bounce:

What is the point in having a LAN party, if the hole point is to have no internet? I play a hundred games over LAN with no internet. Why would you want to log onto the internet to play a LAN ("L" = LOCAL) party?

I may try that!

Again.. i dont want the internet , just want to have LAN with no internet! Thats pretty bad when all 54 games i have will do it, but Valve or steam or whoever cant do it, It's l\kinda like ET, it wants to call home EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Well NONE of the Half life stuff will stay on his computer! or steam or whatever!

My post told you how to do it, as well....

Plus, you didn't need a post for each reply to a quote :p

You just need to combine it all into one post yo.

And what do you mean 'stay on his computer'?

Copy your entire Steam folder into his program files, then run Steam.exe and log in with your details. There is no reason why it shouldn't stay on his computer.
Oh yeah, do you have a PC running the Source Dedicated Server. Because without that you can't Lan. So you will need an extra PC to be the server.

I dont know how to combine into one post. And what i meant by that, is i mean after i copy everything over i would delete it after we were done!:D

Is there a Steam folder in the Valve folder?
It doesn't matter on which computer you logon to to first. You can logon onto yours first then login on his computer.

Thanks.. yeah its just a valve folder, and yeah it does have a steam folder in it!.. But heck like that other dude said, if he has the video card i guess he gets the game for free right?

Really? Whenever I played LAN like with Counter-Strike Source, I'd just host a game and play on the same machine...

Hey Guys, I have another Issue here... It snot about LAN either.. I am playing HL2 EP2 and i am stuck, I have been stuck for about 2 days on this level, and i dont know what i am supposed to do know. I have went downstairs and plugged in the one power thing into the wall.. and i tried to plug in the one by the elevator shaft, But its not long enough.. If someone has a saved game file to help me get past it that would help or just let me know how to get the DERN gate to open.

Please help me!

Move the cords around. Pull the one from the elevator out entirely and switch it with the other one, where there are multiple outlets, and they should fit fine.
