Hi,

A friend of mine is looking for a laptop, he is looking to spend about £1000. Really looking for decent processer, gig of ram and 256 video card would be just right i guess. I dont really know anything about laptops so any help of good makes and stuff would be awsome.

SavRow are brilliant, but probably just a little over his budget, not by far though. So still worth a look for the quality machines they produce.

should be www.savrow.com

Someone on these fourms must have some informations on laptops?

If you are going to be on the go a lot and want to save on battery life then get a Pentium M or Turon CPU. Also notebooks can come with better batteries, like a 12 cell battery. Otherwise I'd get a Athlon 64 if you want performance and don't need a long battery life. Pentium 4's are OK but they will be quite warm on the bottom compared to the other laptops.

Either get one with 512MB memory or upgrade a 256MB laptop to 512 after you buy it.

Toshiba, HP, Compaq are always good brands.

If you buy a laptop from somewhere where you can configure it e.g. the amount of ram etc. then you should find out what kind of ram it uses and look into getting more ram from a company like crucial as this will keep teh cost down big time because I know that some companies charge alot for ram upgrades where you can get it alot cheaper from other companies.

Also I agree with asus on his processor recommendation. Athlon 64 if you plan on leaving it in one place or Pentium M (which are surprisingly damn fast for the actual clock speed) for portability and battery life.

Go turion, if you can find someone that builds some. Turion are about as low in power consumption as pentium m's.

Only problem is is that my friend is looking to play games on it as well. Battle fiels and hl2 and stuff.

The laptops i mentioned are with that in mind, and would do the job for gaming nicely, whilst also having centrino or pentium-M technology, therefore battery life, efficiency etc. The pentium-M is very good for gaming, as fast as high end athlon 64's in fact, due to it's far shorter pipeline.
