Last British WWI veteran dies

Very sad. Outliving both his sons, a wife and partners must of been awful =/

^Damn. He must have felt like death himself. Rest in peace at last.

I know it's so cliche to say this, but why doesn't 'the last WWI veteran' make the news celebrating his achievements before he died. I bet this guy - and others like him - are lying on their death bed feeling unappreciated. It's a shame.

I doubt they died feeling unappreciated. Many many decades worth of appreciation. Just because there aren't any tributes or anything before they die, doesn't mean they died unappreciated.

Ugh, I hear kids saying "the last veteran will go unappreciated while Paris Hilton will be reported" all the time, but damn if it isn't true.

Combination of awe-inspiring as well as saddening to me that he has outlived even most WW2 vets that have come of age.

IMO,

The last veteran will go unappreciated while Paris Hilton will be reported

WWI was a awful war and I really feel for all the people who participated in there.

It is very sad that we've lost our last living link to the horrors of the first world war. We must never forget the suffering that his generation suffered and we must never allow it to be repeated.

111 years. That's pretty impressive. Rest his soul.

Sounds like a good run to me. Think of it the other way round, his boys never had to watch him waste away on his deathbed. ****ing horrible, to outlive his kids was an immense act of mercy on them.

RIP dude, I'm just glad I didn't have to go through the shit he would have.

With his generation also dies the experience of the most unnecessary war of them all.

There have been many more unnecessary wars after that including the Iraq war. He was fighting for our freedom which was under grave danger unlike this so called war on terror. I would not call it unnecessary.

He had his achievements celebrated loads of times post war. Each year there are multiple events that celebrate and thank the braveness of our veterans.

Ultimately this is a very sad day, it's the day we lost the noblest and bravest generation of all and we can't begin to think how much we owe them.

holy shit...living trough both world wars, and don't even forget the spanish flu that killed almost third of europe's population. that's some achievement

In what way? WWI was about old men sending young men to death because of greed and desire for power. It had nothing to do with freedom. Millions of people were slaughtered because the powers of Europe couldn't accept that their rivals were getting stronger.

The only thing to say really is thank you that man and to the millions of others who gave their lives for ours. RIP you will never be forgotten

Are we thinking of the same First World War?
The pointless, horriffic waste of life makes the wars since pale in comparison.

ww1 was a collision of alliances that started cuz x kingdom was ally of y kingdom and suddenlly y kingdom leader was killed by someone who used weapons of z kingdom which is enemy of x and y so they wen to attack him and w kingdom is a buddy of z so he went to help them

it was not like ww2 that the nazs wanted to control the world it was about kings and leaders hating each other

Two people in a room, one has to be shot, the other may live. You don't say here I'll shoot you, so you don't have to mourn me. I s'pose it's not exactly in his power to choose, but still.

He served his country well and lead a good, long life. Rest in peace.

I would imagine that it's worse to bury your child than your parent.

Indeed. Several colonial powers fighting a war against several other colonial powers for no real reason, and with no real difference to countless other wars of the exact same nature that had come before them, apart from the fact that sadly technology had advanced to such a level that infantry warfare was transformed into a slowly churning meat grinder, into which was chucked millions of young men who died over the course of four years to absolutely no-one's gain.

our very last ww1 veteran celebrated his 109th birthday the other day ..at this point what's the use of calling him a veteran? I mean that was only 3 years of his life out of 106 years

holy shit I just looked up the veterans on wiki...there's only 3 left alive. also this isnt the last British WW1 veteran. according to wiki there's still a surving veteran from the UK:

Choules, Claude Stanley

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_surviving_veterans_of_World_War_I

Well I'd guess those three years had a bigger impact on him than any other three of the remaining 103.

probably not in this case:

John Henry Foster "Jack" Babcock (born July 23, 1900) is, at age 109, the last known surviving veteran of the Canadian military....

Having never seen combat, Babcock never considered himself a veteran and moved to the United States in the 1920s, where he joined the United States Army and eventually became an electrician.

How much longer do you think until its the last "WWII" veteran? I know that war was some twenty years later, but I remember reading somewhere that either 100 or 200 WWII veterans die daily. Can't remember which one though.

I guess the news was too busy reporting on Nancy, Glenn, O'Riley, Hannity, Obama, and some Harvard professor to care about the last of a generation of freedom fighters.

I hate the current generations.

Care to clarify a little--what exactly is it that you hate? The pundits? Cable news? everyone of this generation? Perhaps you need some advice on which news sources you rely on.

freedom fighters!!!

I hate the current generations.

so you hate all humanity. because there's many generations of people out there. there's young people (much like you) and there's even younger people, and then there's even younger people that drool and coo ..which shouldnt be mistaken for old people, who also drool and make cooing sounds

I too hate the current generations but especially your generation because it is full of stupid

Yeah, I pretty much hate humanity.

They're all jerks in some way or another.

But don't turn the thread about me. Honor the veteran.
